SEGA will publish an all-new Aliens vs. Predator (working title) game in early 2010. The game is currently in development with independent developer Rebellion, creators of the original 1999 Aliens versus Predator
Can Rebellion reach the highs of the original? Will it suffer from consolitis? So much potential for both greatness and suckage, all wrapped up in one announcement...

No, yes and Rebellion gave up on actually putting an effort into development years ago. For the last three years they've pretty much exclusively worked on licensed movie shovelware for handhelds, where they would recycle the same engine and gameplay mechanics.

Let's prove hope that they prove us wrong with Shellshock 2, Battlefront 3 and this AvP title.

I never completely liked the original; it felt... incomplete, somehow.
As to Rebellion's repertoire, a chronological list of the games they've made reveals a strange mix of mediocre games and great games, and there's never been a particularly long streak of one or the other.

Wow, they made Largo Winch...
There are some decent games in their repertoire, Rogue Trooper didn't blow anyone away, but it was pretty good.
They have strong roots in the comic book scene, going so far as to publish stuff themselves. Eidos appear to have dumped a fair amount of shitty projects on them, like this Shellshock:Blood Trails thing which could account for some horrible titles. Largo Winch had potential for a good adventure/puzzle game but ended up worse than bargain bin.
Edit:dethtoll stop posting before me :ebil:

Hey, Shellshock 2 looks great. Don't judge before it's out, handsniffer.

The complete lack of anything resembling a narrative probably had something to do with that.

And it helped the game immensely compared to the space opera symphony of cliches that is the second, it's fast and to the point, it's perfect.

Oh, hm? A flow and story as dumb as Alien: Ressurection's combined with enemies that will always politely wait for you step over that invisible boundary before doing anything? Technology largely somehow worse than the first's with ugly lack of sprite occlusion or proper limbs blowing-off, completely uninspired use of particles, even a door that is essentially an animated gif at some point? Fucking masterpiece.
Its only saving points are its multiplayer modes which are a little less boring, playing it in multiplayer I could almost understand.

There's nothing much original left to tell in framework of what people expect from limited concept of Aliens in the first place. In the end all what matters is having some satisfying exoskeleton crushing spree. Still, having some NPC interaction, advanced squad tactics and missions based on multiple goals would be nice as opposed to ye olde school straightforward Doomlike action. In this regard I'm hoping the delayed Aliens : Colonial Marines won't be disappointing.
