I think without the ability to save in vanilla, this would be extremely difficult and I'd like to see a maniac who managed to finish the vanilla marine campaign on DC. :p
I had to settle for finishing the Marine campaign on the medium difficulty in the unpatched game. I did hear about others who completed the entire game on DC (including one or two who got every extra) before the patch was released.

I thought AVP1 was scarier because of the (relatively) unscripted facehuggers, which are pratically unexistent in AVP2... unless you are stupid enough to mess with eggs.

I thought AVP2 had really good multiplayer, personally. Nice community, too.

AVP2 multiplayer is the craziest shit I've ever played.

Please don't remind me that small cavern where I, as a Predator, had to dodge Queen's charge attacks, maneuver among stalagmites, and at the same time I had to pin down two loose facehuggers with my speargun from a safe distance! Actually, maniacally difficult situations like this are the most memorable ones, dudes at Rebellion knew what they are doing.

Indeed, combat in AVP1 was nice and frenetic, but the levels were generally unappealing and repetitive. AVP2 had much cooler levels as well as a rather compelling plot.
I guess each game had its own strenghts. In an ideal world, AVP3 should combine AVP1's intensity and "unscripted" nature with AVP2's cinematic presentation. And give us the ability to shake off face huggers.

The first face-hugger in Primal Hunt is one of the shittiest "wait, did I just die?/reload" moments in gaming history.

Where as the ones in AvP1 would scare the shit out of you since most of the time you could barely even see them but hear that "tick tick tick" noise they`d make as they were running at you, and suddenly BOOM they were on your face. That scared me 100% of the time.

Agreedo.
Which is also what Colonial Marines appears to be going for, hope it's not really canceled.

It isn't cancelled. The article states that it is being 'reviewed'. Not good news, but it is still technically 'alive'.
