A marine woman with a strange spanish/standard english dialect (lolz) tells you exactly what you need to do.
That's the (
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MissionControl) "Mission Control"/"voice inside your head" trope, which was popularised in modern shooters by Halo's Cortana.
I'm surprised that you guys weren't expecting a linear and heavily scripted shooter, just like the majority of modern FPSes.

It doesn't make the game not fun.

Well I'd say that is how the majority of FPSs are, since the beginning of time. But this game really goes to the next level on the hand holding, methinks.
It's been awhile since I played Halo, but this game has to be more guided than it. Halo at least has some nice big open areas and that not-so-trivial vehicle aspect.
I'm playing STALKER CoP and AvP currently and it is rather eye opening to go from one game's idea of gameplay to the other. ;)

I would say Metal Gear Solid popularized it before anyone else did (yes I'm aware it's not an FPS, it's still the same goddamn trope.)

I was well aware of MGS when I made the original post, but the fact it's not a FPS made me mention Halo - which set a lot of trends for modern shooters, not just those of first person. It arguably the most influential game in the genre since Half-Life 1.
Eg:-
* Only carrying 2-3 weapons at once, thus forcing you to be more tactical with your choices. The trope from Doom of one dude carrying an entire arsenal of 9+ weapons frankly stretched the suspension of disbelief for many people, of course that trope is still more than welcome in retro throwbacks like Painkiller and Serious Sam 1, which shine in their back to basics gameplay.
* A dedicated grenade hotkey that resulting in instantly lobbed (no cooking), you didn't have to specifically equip 'nades. One very welcome streamlining decision, IMO.
* Recharging shields on top of the traditional health meter; replaced with regenerating health in Halo 2. Both systems frankly stretch disbelief equally, so it comes down to preference. I can understand a scifi supersoldier with regen health, but it became kinda ridiculous when the likes of Call of Duty adopted Halo 2's health system (mind you it's a welcome gameplay mechanic in a series renown for artificially inflated difficulty like CoD, so it's a concession for making a more fair experience which I can live with, IMO).
*
EDIT: Fuck you for making me rant about Halo.

Then again, included in a popular game isn't popularized either.
Learned an important lesson today: If you set an Xeno on fire, be sure it's dead, or it will grab your leg. Being a hardcore rookie marine, you will laugh at the flaming alien, hit in in the head with your rifle, causing it to explode and cover you in acid which kills you.
Stick with the shotgun.

How's the multiplayer?

What about being included in a popular game, which System Shock 2 is/was?
