SS2 was popular? I always saw it as one of those cult games that everyone's heard of but nobody who isn't on TTLG actually played. Bioshock certainly didn't get more people playing the game, that's for sure.

I could be wrong, but I don't think EA was really in the habit of releasing "Gold" editions of games unless they sold well. Of course, selling well for a PC game in 1999 is different than selling well for a console game from the last few generations. Thief's sales figures probably wouldn't look impressive now but it was a huge hit.

Halo, again. I agree it's popular, but come on:

* Only carrying 2-3 weapons at once, thus forcing you to be more tactical with your choices. The trope from Doom of one dude carrying an entire arsenal of 9+ weapons frankly stretched the suspension of disbelief for many people, of course that trope is still more than welcome in retro throwbacks like Painkiller and Serious Sam 1, which shine in their back to basics gameplay.
*
Tactical use of required/limited weapons in games like Tribes, Delta Force series, Rainbow Six series, ... (side note - I miss the option to perform a 'tactical' reload in SWAT 3, more games should have that...)

* A dedicated grenade hotkey that resulting in instantly lobbed (no cooking), you didn't have to specifically equip 'nades. One very welcome streamlining decision, IMO.
*
Inventory use (throw grenade) hotkeys in games like Future Shock, SkyNET, Soldier Of Fortune ... Quake 2 (sort of)

* Recharging shields on top of the traditional health meter; replaced with regenerating health in Halo 2. Both systems frankly stretch disbelief equally, so it comes down to preference. I can understand a scifi supersoldier with regen health, but it became kinda ridiculous when the likes of Call of Duty adopted Halo 2's health system (mind you it's a welcome gameplay mechanic in a series renown for artificially inflated difficulty like CoD, so it's a concession for making a more fair experience which I can live with, IMO).
*
Combination of shields/armor/health in games like Terra Nova: Strike Force Centurai, Dark Forces, Tribes, ... (and lots of sim-related games) X-Wing/TIE Fighter, MechWarrior series, ...
Then there's guns 'akimbo' in Halo 2, but that wasn't the first either... argh, it never ends! :thumb:

Since when did EA have fuck all to do with Thief?
Zygoptera on 21/2/2010 at 02:00
You need to read JM's post again- he doesn't say EA had anything to do with Thief.

Since when did System Shock 2 have a Gold version?
Jason Moyer on 21/2/2010 at 03:24
It's the version I have, actually. Not any different from the original release, afaik, except it didn't come with a printed manual and it's prepatched.
System Shock 2 is one of those games that everyone's played and everyone loves and is consistently in every top 10 games of all time list published anywhere but at the same time everyone acts like it's an underground/underappreciated gem.
Edit: Damn it, it's not called "gold". It was part of the "Classics" series that EA did for their most popular games around 2000-ish (as far as I remember this included SS2, Alpha Centauri, one of the NFS games, etc).

None of which were mainstream shooters like Halo (aside from Q2 which you dont seem to really decide; havent played it so cant comment).

How is hard this point to grasp? Pioneered != popularised. Halo was such a success that the majority of shooters started copying its featureset.
Another example is Call of Duty, it may not of been the first game to have down-sight aiming, but it did popularise it. To the point where the majority of FPSes since have had it.
