Oh. See, I'm barely conscious, so I missed that part.

The comparison between this game's "jungle" and what Crysis does is....well I'm at a loss for words. Crysis is in its own class.
Crysis is indeed in it's own class. But there are 2 unfortunate facts. One, Crysis does exist, it takes place in a jungle, and I have trouble believing anybody who cloaked and pulled out pistols with laser sights even once didn't think 'Predator' right then and there. I don't expect Crysis level visuals, it's not really fair to simply out and out ignore the gold standard either.
Much more importantly, even ignoring Crysis, the 'Jungle' is just plain sparse. This isn't Crysis, but it ain't Far Cry either, and honestly it's sparse on the level of games from 5+ years ago. That ain't really much of a jungle.

Rebellion seem pleased with the general critical reception and are already in talks with Sega to do a sequel, according to (
http://www.develop-online.net/news/33958/Rebellion-elated-with-AvP-sales-wants-sequel) this link. Apparently it's thus far the fastest selling game of 2010 in UK, but that's probably thanks to the brand power of the licenses.
Quote:
Kingsley said he was generally happy with the game's critical response.
“The reviews have been mostly good,” he said. “We've had three totally shit reviews by some Americans, which is a bit odd. Some of them were inexcusably bad.
“If you discount those poor reviews AvP is averaging high for us.
“Obviously in the past we've had constraints put on us, meaning we've released games that we wanted to spend a bit more time on, which have critically been a bit underwhelming. That's always a shame.”
Kingsley confirmed he was referring to recent release Rogue Warrior when citing those constraints.
“We do the best we can given the circumstances, and hopefully we have enough time to make the best game we possibly can, and that's what happened with AvP.
“With Rogue Warrior, we did the best we could in the timeframe, and I doubt anyone could do any better given the circumstance."

I meant the lines from the aliens and predator movies being used in the movie avp2, not the game.
There are bigger problems than that in AvP Requiem to be upset about. Eg How the hell does the Predalien reproduce when it's not a Queen and why in God's name does it exclusively implant embryos into pregnant women?
Not to mention AvP2 is essentially a pretty poor slasher film with scifi monsters, rather than your usual hulking men in masks who move like glaciers.
Mind you I've yet to see the first film by dethtoll's favourite director, Paul W.S. Anderson, but I doubt that it'd be much worse than this one.

I agree in every aspect, I was just citing the topic at hand.
Also.. The first one I would say is better than Requiem for 2 reasons. Less of a OMGdidYOUseeTHATitWASjustLIKEinTEHotherMOVIEZomg!!11!1 wank fest (marginally), and that Lance was actually in it. We're still talking just marginally better though. much less gory though.
there is quite the story tie in with the first AVP movie in the marine campaign though, if you can be bothered to search for the audio logs. And like I said before, I think that's okay despite how bad the movie was.

Yeah it looks to me like they cherry-picked the better ideas from the AvP movies and slotted them into a slimmed-down version of AvP2's story.
That said, what actually happened to having the player character actually be a character. I don't think I've heard a protagonist speak since before Half-Life 2, and that was one of the most interesting parts of AvP2's story - playing someone who was properly fleshed out and expressed emotion about his squadmates.
Finished the marine campaign now - the "twist" at the end could be seen a mile away by anyone who's watched an alien film. It still felt out of place. The fighting on the last level (Pyramid) was finally a challenge, and I wish it had continued for a bit longer.
However, on to the Predator. Completely new control system - seems nonsensical at first, but after you figure out what they're trying to do, is actually a big improvement. AvP 1/2 treated the Predator as basically a super-tough version of the marine - traditional weapon select, lots of alien shooting galleries, move any more than 2mph and suddenyl everyone can see you just fine. It never really felt like Predator.
In AvP3, the stealth is beefed up, including a tacked-on but fun use of the Pred's voice recorder to distract people. The weapons system is changed so that you always have your blades at the ready, select a secondary weapon using the number keys, and then have a seperate button for attacking with that. It feels much more true to the Pred to be less clumsy and not have to switch weapons on the fly. The melee is passable, but yeah, the kill animations for aliens are a pretty good way to melt your face off. Doesn't stop ripping a marine's spine out and watching their eyes and tongue loll about in shock any less gruesomely fun.
It does make me pine for a Predator-exclusive game. I think there's a lot of potential in the Predator license to make a massive open-world Far Cry jungle filled with mercenaries doing nefarious things, and just let you go nuts in the violentest sandbox in town. :cheeky:
I definitely think I'm being more forgiving on AvP than others might, but for personal preference it's exactly the sort of game I love and I can easily forgive the stunted level design and somewhat lack-lustre story when I'm having this much fun. I can certainly see how others would be disappointed with it though.

Anderson has only made two passable films. Mortal Kombat, a fairly satisfying turn-the-brain-off event, and Event Horizon which really is visually kinda fun and creepy if you can somewhat ignore the religious stuff. :D

The only PWSA film worth watching is Event Horizon and that's because he didn't write it.

This game is a boring god-awful piece of crap. Played the marine campaign for 20 minutes and did not flinch a single time. It was so..arcadey. Time to uninstall and never look back.
june gloom on 24/2/2010 at 11:01
Kinda like how AvP1 was arcadey?
