It's not scripted the way most video games are, yes it constantly spawns enemies relatively close to you, but not around the corner, they are spawned so far away from you and in logical-enough spots like air vents that the fact it's scripted doesn't actually permeate your experience at all.
Well, in AVP2 too, Aliens were bursting out of logical-enough spots, like vents and stuff. It's not like they just pop out of nowhere.
On the other hand, I read somewhere that they do that quite often in Primal Hunt.

I found AvP2 to be more enjoyable, although the reasons may be due to the age difference between the two. AvP2 felt slower, perhaps not in pacing, but you're not running around at 20mph against similarly fast enemies. As well, I found the weapons much more satisfying and the gunplay overall more enjoyable.
But a sniper rifle that's given to you ten seconds before the end of the game? What? Did someone feel that their multiplayer-only gun should get a surprise SP cameo?

I'm with TF. AvP was fucking brilliant. AvP2 was a glossy turd.

Agreeing with TF has to be like defending pedophilia or something.

That´s weird.
I remember finding the AVP2 sniper rifle after killing a predator, when I felt inside a small room with plenty of ammo and stuff...
Oh, and the ending is weird. Did the girl that is the star of Primal Hunt (sort of a Prequel somehow) survived the end of AVP2 ?
I only played the Predalien campaign in Primal Hunt, found it very dull. Too short and can´t be compared to the coolness of the alien campaign.

It's a hard job but somebody has to do it. Those kids aren't getting interfered with by themselves.

Seconded, or is that thirded now? While AvP's lack of story would normally be a big turn off for me it's game play was so perfectly realised that I didn't care. The marine sections where unbelievably tense, the predator sections pure bad-assery and the being an alien was unlike anything else I had ever played. It made me think in a completely different way and quickly became my favourite.

One minor detail that rarely gets mentioned about AvP was that it had some form of volumetric explosion simulation going on. If you used the grenade launcher to put the sticky mines up in the air vents and crawlspaces the aliens like then you would see explosions bursting out of them that conformed to the size and shape of the crawlspace and flowed around corners.
I think it was a nice side effect of the water simulation they wrote for the game and it is just an immersion detail that doesn't wildly affect the gameplay but is very cool when you notice that explosions behave in a more realistic fashion than the normal spherical damage radius that is common.
That said while AvP got the atmosphere and gameplay pretty right it lacked narrative and some of the levels were punishingly unfair. The orbital platform with the alien cyborg hybrid jobs on it took all the advantages the marine had away namely - long range and rate of fire. And then threw lots of fast movers at you while you tried to figure out where the level designer wanted you to go through cramped corridors with plenty of ambush spots to deal with. Ugly ugly level and gameplay design choices there.
AvP2 was a little blander in the gameplay but it was much fairer on letting you know what you needed to do and where you needed to go. It also told a pretty decent interleaved story.

If I wanted to run around at 20mph blasting aliens with zero plot whatsoever and ugly levels I'd go play the Aliens TC for Doom.

The cyborgs were best dealt with by leaping at them and clawing them to pieces. Or thats what I did.
Some extra things I loved about AvP1 over AvP2 was that there was no game saving (atleast in the normal version anyway), so if you died that was it. You had to start the WHOLE level again. Now while to some this might sound really annoying it actually added more realism to it as well as adding to the overall tension since every battle you took could be your last. That for me, ESPECIALLY as the alien made the game really fricken hard and really bloody scary.
Another thing in AvP1 solely on the Alien campaign side of things was just how evil the game style was. By this I`m referring to the fact that when you as the alien are bearing up on a unarmed civilian they would literally burst into tears and cower on the ground infront of you. And you being the alien your just about to chomp their head off for health. That to me was chilling gameplay, that would have you feeling really bad afterwards (unless your an evil bastard :p). Moments like that, whilst chilling yes are more true of what it was to be one of those aliens.
Neither of the above 2 things was in AvP2 and I strongly think that the game suffered greatly because of not having them in it.
