I found that not being able to save your game and having no checkpoints was more than a little frustrating. It essentially forced you to memorise the levels and their spawn points, and being ambushed by the next wave and checking that off on your mental map before starting from scratch again quickly got old.
The second point though, yeah. It was pretty chilling for the first couple of civilians you met.

You can do the same thing to civvies in AvP2.

Some extra things I loved about AvP1 over AvP2 was that there was no game saving (atleast in the normal version anyway), so if you died that was it. You had to start the WHOLE level again. Now while to some this might sound really annoying it actually added more realism to it as well as adding to the overall tension since every battle you took could be your last. That for me, ESPECIALLY as the alien made the game really fricken hard and really bloody scary.
What would add the game realism would be that if you were killed for the first time, the game would automatically uninstall, hahaha. Like if there was no tension with two save slots per mission...

Tension would be that if you were killed your PC was reformatted.

Another thing in AvP1 solely on the Alien campaign side of things was just how evil the game style was. By this I`m referring to the fact that when you as the alien are bearing up on a unarmed civilian they would literally burst into tears and cower on the ground infront of you. And you being the alien your just about to chomp their head off for health. That to me was chilling gameplay, that would have you feeling really bad afterwards (unless your an evil bastard :p). Moments like that, whilst chilling yes are more true of what it was to be one of those aliens.
Neither of the above 2 things was in AvP2 and I strongly think that the game suffered greatly because of not having them in it.
As Dethtoll said, that feature is very much in AvP2.

I almost forgot about the volume explosions, they're not generated at a very high resolution but I don't think I've ever seen that feature unscripted in another game.

Yeah, now if only that game didn't have terrible sound direction with most events picking one out of two short, extremely repetitive sounds to play, to the point you hear the same 'oh god' sample once every two seconds.
And the aliens how shall I say...'share' the main sound library most of their sounds were pulled from with that of the sand leapers from diablo2, which is rather unfortunate.

Steel Battalion would erase your campaign progress if you failed to eject (hit a certain button) when killed, and even that was considered brutal :D

I`ve not played AvP2 in several years now. But I was sure there was check points in it. If I`m wrong my bad.
One area that I`ll give AvP2 points for is the singleplayer mods for it. Was a few really fun ones for it. Where as AvP1 had next to none.

I never explored the mods for AvP2. What are some standouts?

Hrm, I seem to have forgotten that.
Anyway, random question: I have this friend pestering me to play AvP2 multiplayer because he wants to lurk in the darkness and bite my head off in revenge for the 3674 times I plastered his ass in Descent back in the day. The question is, would you guys say that AvP2's multiplayer is worth it? Or are we better off trying to chuck spinfusor discs into each other's heads in Tribes 2?
(okay, that's two questions. but do let me know what you think.)
