I'm told AvP2 multi is fucking ace. I wouldn't know, just telling you what I've heard.
Sulphur on 16/2/2009 at 20:06
I've been told that too, but no one's been forthcoming with an explanation of what exactly makes it so great. I'm just wondering how those 3 radically different playstyles balance out in multi.
Fragony on 16/2/2009 at 21:06
It is actually just as scary as the single player. Not that balanced but that kinda makes it even better.

There's a lot of interplay there between the races, which tends to keep things more varied.
Consider for example, a typical team deathmatch, you're a predator. You're up against humans and xeno. You take more damage then either, can kill like a champ, and can turn invisible. But there are lots of caveats. For one, your missile weapons are slow enough that a xeno who gets close will eat you. If you pull your melee out though, humans will shoot you dead before you get close. You can cloak, but humans can somewhat see you if you cloak, and their motion trackers will see you if you move. Of course, the xenos can see you whether or not you move, and they will kill you if you're motionless, so what do you do? You've got super powerful one hit kill homing weapons - but they're slow, and they only work when a target is locked. To lock a target, you need to switch to thermal vision for humans, or electrical for xenos. But the other species is essentially invisible in a vision mode. And either one can kill you quick if you don't realize they're there. So do you risk it, or avoid using your best weapons?
So, you switch to a human. Now you've got invisible preds, sneaky aliens - no race limited blindess, but your lamp doesn't work forever, it can get dark, and the motion tracker has a refresh rate fast enough that you'll know they're there - but you won't know exactly where. The other team, of couse, knows this and will attack from odd directions whenever possible.
So you go xeno. You seen everyone and everything, lit up with auras, can see perfectly in the dark, and can climb on walls. If you get close, you can off anyone pretty easily. But preds have homing weapons, humans have smartguns, and any of either races weapons is going to kill you real, real quick.
That's before you start to consider racial subclasses, or the alien lifecycle mode, or any of the other game modes but team deathmatch. There's a lot to like, a lot of choice to make, and if one style gets old, you can always switch to another.
Of course, by now it's bound to be mostly dead.

Lifecycle mode is by far the most awesome thing about AvP2 multiplayer. Just be sure that the respawn time is set to longer than it takes for you to chestburst, otherwise the guy you just grabbed will respawn and camp over his own corpse until you come out, and kill you immediately.
In a patch they also added an option that let you turn into the Queen if you managed to get 10 kills without dying, which was kind of awesome.

I second all of the above. I played a bit of AvP2 a couple of years back and was surprised so many people were still playing it. There were quite a few friendly people too, though dissapointingly few playing the lifecycle mode...

I did a few lans of AvP2. Damn fine gameplay all in all. Alien was my favorite overall for the speed. Only downside to the life cycle side when enabled is that the face huggers have an extremelly long range, and deadly accurate.
Now as a Predator you`d have somewhat of a chance of avoiding that, but as a human you`d have next to none. Or so it was for me when I played as them anyway. Gotta say playing as a marine in multiplayer and having that motion tracker go off with several blips I`d panic everytime since gameplay was just so quick.

I never explored the mods for AvP2. What are some standouts?
Its been too many years since I last played the game to remember them honestly. But I got them all from here:

Having a look just now it looks like theres been a few more since I last downloaded some.

Reading this thread made me want to play AvP1. I played 2 a few years ago and enjoyed it, but never could get into the first one.
I just started the Alien campaign and I am a little annoyed. The wall climbing view adjustment is pissing me off, is there any way to turn it off? I mean, I get above a marine and drop down on him, but by the time I land my view flipped away from him and I get totally disoriented.
Also, what is up with people bursting into flames when I kill them o.0

They're carrying molotov cocktails which they can either throw when they see you or drop when killed.
Rogue Keeper on 17/2/2009 at 15:51
You can learn to move the mouse appropriately while falling during a drop attack, so you'll be looking where you want to when you land. Just practice.
Yes, watch out for civies with molotovs, they can be dangerous. Just like the one thing worse than an alien leaping at you is a BURNING alien leaping at you (what somehow make flamethrowers an inefficient last resort weapon in close quarters), if you actually play an alien, fire can consume your health quickly. Fortunately you still can do headbites and eat corpses while burning. If there's nobody to consume nearby, run around like crazy and it will stop in a moment.
