It's pretty stupid to pay for one of those over-priced Dell's. More often than not you can have custom built an equivalent machine for far less money from a computer shop/parts retailer.

Yeah, it's true. I actually got an Alienware back in 2000 and it was a lemon - the hard drive died five times while owning it and all they would do would replace the hard drive, not acknowledging that there was something inherent in the system causing this to happen. LAME. Support may have gotten better since the merger with Dell, I dunno. Still horrendously overpriced.

Eh. I can see Alienwares being good for people who want the best of the best but aren't willing to put the time and effort into learning how to build their own. Personally I dislike the lack of control over your parts, and of course the enormous price.

I saw this on shacknews. How is this news or at all interesting? Off-the-shelf computers are normally loaded (bloated) with software. It makes sense that ones geared toward gamers will have gaming software.

While I am a big supporter of Valve and 95% of the time have no problems with steam. I have to say I agree with smallfry on priniciple.
EDIT: Dethtoll you forgot to mention that along with Steam they're giving away a free copy of Portal. no BFD if youre spending the money on an alienware, but it is definately noteworthy compared to just steam being loaded on there.
