Read this over on RPS today:
Here’s a mod several readers have emailed me about, which was pleasing but also slightly confusing as I’ve never expressed a great deal of interest in the games it concerns – Dragon Age and Baldur’s Gate. I love them both though, so ta muchly, and all manner of mod tips are welcome at the sturdy oaken door of my email account. This particular delight is Baldur’s Gate II Redux, or at least the first module of it, which contains Irenicus’ Dungeon recreated in the Dragon Age engine. It’s an impressive piece of work, although I find myself more interested than engaged. It’s fascinating to realise how much I remember and just how natural it feels to explore this space again. Highly recommended as a curiosity, if nothing else.
There are plans to continue with future modules, which will require an installed version of Baldur’s Gate II to run, in recognition of the use of BioWare’s intellectual property. That’s very good of them. You do all own Baldur’s Gate II already though, right? Having said that, I almost definitely don’t have it installed anywhere.Article:

Personally I like Baldurs Gate as is in the infinity Engine, but I'm sure some of you would like a spiffy 3D version of it to play.

Well it's all very accurate and faithful alright, but yeah, seems a bit pointless. BG2 in the Infinity engine is one of the best looking 2D games ever made. Dragon Age is a mediocre-looking 3D game. I'd rather see someone recreate Baldur's Gate 2 in 2D with modern resolutions and higher-res, hand-painted, smoothly-animated artwork. But the only way we'd see that is with some kind of official remaster like the Monkey Island HD versions.

Why would you recreate a good game in a bad game?

To recreate the good game?

I gotta agree with Koki on this one. It was fine as it was, why force a square peg in a round hole?

I'm usually in favour of fan remakes and the like, but with this one I fail to see the point - mainly because I don't think the ability to move the camera makes up for the loss of visual detail. Perhaps it'd be different if the engine used wasn't the Dragon Age one, but when it comes to the sort of environments the Infinity Engine excelled at, I still haven't seen a full 3D engine doing them justice.

My issue is more that of all the dungeons to pick, friggin' Irenicus' dungeon? The most boring in the game, even if it is the very first?

I don't think the tool should be blamed, but rather the people wielding it.
Most attempts at making baldurs gate homages have always been at the hand of amateurs, while the environments and artwork of baldurs gate were made by talented professionals.
The baldurs gate environments can be recreated in dragon age, or any modern day engine to full detail, but it requires the work of talented and experienced artists.
The infinity engine didn't excel at all. It displayed pre-rendered images, and the bulk of that work was made outside of the engine, by artists.

Other than the first Icewind Dale, I can't say I found the artwork in the IE games to be particularly stunning, anyway. It's very well done, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't take a PST screenshot to show someone what a PC is capable of.
