All console games are created equal... - by EvaUnit02

As we know the current crop of "HD" consoles are more or less evenly matched, but there's always the odd port that better optimised than the other.
I'm sure that we all remember (
http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46241) this enlightening link from fett's recent (
http://ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126948) PS2 whining and dining thread.
Quote:
Xbox 360
Alone in the Dark = 1040x600 (2xAA)
Tomb Raider Underworld = 1024x576 (2xAA) - depth buffer is 1040x576
Silent Hill: Homecoming = 1280x720 (2xAA)
Ghostbusters = 1280x720 (2xAA)
Playstation 3
Alone in the Dark: Inferno = 1120x630 (no AA)
Tomb Raider: Underworld = 1280x720 (QAA)
Silent Hill: Homecoming = 1024x576 (no AA)
Ghostbusters = 960x540 (QAA)
Notice how much lower the resolution of Ghostbusters for PS3 is compared to the 360 version (the former is not even running in a HD resolution!), keep the that in mind and watch (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH9jlrQfjCo&feature=channel) this comparison video.
Oh Lawd, what a difference the increased resolution of the 360 version makes.
EDIT: Comparison video link fixed.

I think I'm starting to understand PS3 fanboys. You spend that much money on a console, you'd want to feel justified in buying it too.

Yeah, deth, I can't help but wonder if that's it. I mean, do people honestly care about this stuff?
No really.
Mostly when I see those comparison videos/screenshots I'm left scratching my head trying to figure out which one is supposed to be the better looking one. In that video... I guess the XBox360 part is a bit darker? I am about as far from a videophile as you can get (I gladly play PC games at 800x600 and watch movies on VHS), so this kind of behaviour always confounds me. Do people honestly care about this stuff or are they just faking it for some mad reason? Like dethy says, is it just so they won't feel like they've wasted their money because they bought the absolutely LATEST thingamajing that has the HIGHEST NUMBERS in it's stats?

Isn't this just a form of that? And we know how popular that is.

That is indeed part of the driving force behind it. The need to have your decision validated, to have your choice proven as right, is the cause for most of the blind obsession on display. This is also why most fanboys display a reckless disregard for facts and logic.
It's human nature. It's unavoidable. And, unfortunately, the perceived anonymity of the internet tends to bring out the worst of it.
That said, I'm a fan of Sony's internal studios and the platform's exclusives because, let's face it, a huge chunk of them aren't going to be available on any other platform. It also helps that Sony's first-party devs make rather good games, and focus their energies on various genres instead of remaking FPS after FPS in varying shades of grey.
That's not the reason why I got a PS3, though. It was pretty much only to satisfy the raving MGS fanboy inside me.
And I don't regret that decision for a single goddamn day. :D

Thank goodness I only bought it for the blu-ray player, which pretty much wipes the floor with any stand-alone. Anything else that came with it, I consider just a bonus.

this comparison video.
The only difference I can see is it looks like someone jacked the gamma up on the PS3 version. Beyond that, they're about identical.
You know, I generally consider myself a fairly optimistic person, but every time I make the mistake of reading Gametrailers or Youtube comments...oh god. That much concentrated dumb makes me fret for the future and beg for a bullet to the brainpan so I won't have to live in a world run by these people when I've reached my elderly years. They won't take care of me. Oh no. They'll be too busy bitching about the minute differences that makes their whatever of choice better than yours, quoting Tool, and calling people ghey fanboiz.
And it isn't just one or two dumb comments. It's like 2000 people posting 2000 posts of nothing but the most inane shit ever.

Yep, the biggest problem of xbox360 is that it hasn't enough worthy exclusives to justify its buying for those who actively use PC for gaming. PS3 stands more aside from PC, so it's more interesting as alternative. Speaking of worthy exclusives, I think PS2 still is much better than 360 and PS3 combined.
But nothing can beat PC of course.
