Funny.. Wonder why I never thought of using Windows' Search function before now. I knew it had the word "name" in it, so I did that on my old PC, and there it was, under Adobe Acrobat's folder (no wonder I didn't find it earlier)! Now we all know why I'm world-famous for such horrible organizational skills, even if my excuse is that it was just a 'temporary home'.
Of course, now this is incomplete, not including the newly discovered names from the various Thief Gold WAVs I just posted. How bout I include them before posting, eh? ;)
EDIT: Ok, this should pretty much be it. Keep in mind I didn't include street or city names as I just wanted to prove I could list nearly all proper names (belonging to people) :cheeky:
Note: In case there is some confusion, words in brackets ("[", ]") are assumed titles and not actually found in any text. For instance, if one mage mentions a name in a letter to another mage, and the context seems right, this implies to me the other is also a mage. Let it be known I wouldn't have appended titles or surnames unless I felt there was reason for assuming such relationships.

It will be beautiful to behold, if you would, please. Then could we get the list archived for future reference somewhere more permanent so we don't have dead links for newbies to click on?
deadman on 17/8/2003 at 22:48
Heh, I'd say! But first, we must come to some agreement on how to sort the names and whether or not to separate city/street/etc. names or incorporate them into one big list. I suppose either you or I could do that, if you are sure you found them all (from maps, texts and such). At that point, we clean up the thread, or perhaps start a new one, and ask that it be archived!
Wow, wouldn't we be special if something we did was honored so?

'Twould be awesome indeed, deadman.
As for deciding on a format: Unfortunately, some might prefer a chronological approach, but alphabetical is also wonderful. I mentioned before that I'm personally interested in a list that defines the names canonically. How about an alphabetized list that follows this format:
"Benny, Officer: TDP/G, TMA, T3: Loveable drunk guard seen everywhere in The City. Benny's often found in the company of his fellow guardsman Jax...."
and so on....
Or we could ask for our fellow taffers' input. If we do this, let's make it informative as well. The "A Novice Keeper's Lexicon" at Thief-TheCircle.com was a good start, but needs completing. Let's make it pure canon. No speculative comments without clear disclaimer.
The CD's aren't available to me at this time. My list came off of a floppy-copy I'd made 7 months ago for my own research. I won't be much help with briefings, movies, or waves. It's a pain in the butt to search for transcripts in these forums because the links are dead or the lists are incomplete, thus my hope that once this list for our muse Bukary is completed, I'll be able to copy it to a floppy (at least), or have it archived at Thief-TheCircle.com as "A (Master) Keeper's Lexicon."

Yeah, I was just going to suggest something similar. Alphabetical just looks nice, though titles and first names can screw it up, so having the formal "[Last], [First]" name format would work nice. But what about those with first, last names, AND job or social titles? "[Last], [First], [Title]"?? Someone who really knows how these things ought to be done should come forward, as I have no clue :cheeky:. I agree a small quip of each person would be nice, but tedious to be sure, and I'd surely feel certain comments of the most flammatory variety would come my way if any of that was done in
my words. But then you say you don't have the game CDs with you (are you crazy??) and can't check up on things, so this means you can't come up with descriptions of those you haven't already described. Maybe it could be put off? :laff:
In one way, I agree everything should be canon and just as it is in the texts, but in many cases I feel quite confident this person IS Acolyte something or other, or Brother this or that, and would like their title to be known. Of course, if we do describe them all, a note could be made that they "
appear" to be something or other. Or maybe you were talking about something different entirely..
deadman.
jtr7 on 18/8/2003 at 20:20
Deadman, as far as "[Last], [First], [Title]," I think the most common occurrence should be used for the full description. The other versions should be used as well but with the instructive statement: "See J. Rampone, President."
And I agree with you that any speculation should be marked/highlighted as such, as in the case of the likely title of "Acolyte," when we don't actually see/hear it used. You understood me fine, deadman.
Yeah, it's makin' me crazy not getting a Thief fix now and again. To further complicate matters, even if I had the CD's I have to use the library's computers... and they don't have CD-ROM drives. Otherwise, I would be on it.

is the Bricklayer, Benny, Sergeant? I shouldn't like to come up with an in-depth guide to names mostly consisting of filler in the form of "See B., Benny, Bricklayer" ;)

You understood me fine, deadman. As we'll have to go back (or maybe mostly me, at least until you get your CDs and the ability to use them back) anyway, we might as well determine how much or little of a stretch it is to assume someone has this title or another. From what I recall, at least some definitely
did have this title, but it never showed up in that order before (i.e., "Here are a list of all Acolytes: Jacow, Kevil, Aroun, and Brosius". Their names might not appear explicitly as "Acolyte Jacow" or "Acolyte Kevil", but because of the text it's a given. I can't recall any specific example right now, but I think it would also be best to give conditional descriptors, as in "most-likely" or "perhaps" :p.
Also, on a side-note, how is it possible to come up with quirky or amusing descriptions of names when they're only found once in a text or WAV? I'll leave that job to you :laff:.
I think it would be best to start researching for these descriptions now. What, if any limit should be placed, should be the maximum or minimum description length for each name? You think I'd just run with it and not have all these questions, but I am an ill-confident pageboy, you know..
deadman.

deadman, first let me say your efforts, as are those of JTR7 are to be applauded. Having made some similar lists in the past I am well aware of the consumption of time and energy required.
Regarding the format. Sub-headings such as: Street names-Buildings-Township areas-Characters etc. would be invaluable to the researchers using your list(s).
An expansion of the terminology might be a little burdensome, after all there are dictionaries that amply explain " acolyte, priest, etc. " :D The catalog of "monsters" might have some value. Is it a Spybot, a Warbot, a Robot, a spiderbot, and so on. Is it an Explosive device, a sunburst or what. Many terms outside Canon are used in postings. The authors picking what they think is a descriptive "name" that will be recognized and, let's face it, Canon itself does not always use the same name for the same device.
In the case of the "Sunburst" of the astronomer, an individual developed this in secret and named it. No reference shows that this information was given the Hammers (RTC) or the Mechanists (Soulforge Turret room) so multiple names are not unreasonable, but for players discussing these from differing "Missions" are sometimes using the terms interchangebly to the confusion of many.
Good luck to you and jtr7 and thanks for augmenting my existing lists.
