First, thanks, theBlackman, for your kind input.:)
Deadman,
I think we'll have to assume (uh-oh, more assumption) that the majority of those who will benefit and enjoy the list will be Thief fans, and will be able to navigate through it for info.
Let's put uncommonly used and assumed titles in the description itself, and commonly used titles with the name. I wouldn't know another way to avoid the filler problem.
We'll keep the amusing stuff for those who deserve it, like Benny. Otherwise, let's try to keep descriptions matter-of-fact and under 50 words, as a breakable rule--a goal to try for, but not so rigid. The major characters deserve more. I think we can agree that Benny is an honorary major character.
Let's give the list a title and introduction that expresses that it's written in a matter-of-fact format for veteran thief players who are creating a fan mission, fan fiction, RPG, or who just have a question about a Thief character or place (or thing?). "A Thief Fan's Encyclopedia (Text Only)?"

your responsibilities. I hate introductions! :laff: How about "a Thief Fan's Encyclopedia of Characters", or at least as a sub-title? Unless we were approaching the different items and power-ups from a purely literary approach, I'd much rather instruct users to already-existing guides about Garrett's "tools of the trade" and how to use them. Maybe it's just me but I feel once we start down the road of 'detail' we won't be able to help it but begin to describe each individual object and texture or try to draw real-life inspirations for some of the infamous structures. We have to draw a line somewhere ;). But I suppose the question is whether there is enough text on these everyday Thief's items to write about ourselves. Really important items such as the talismans and The Builder's Chisel ought to be included nonetheless. At this rate this thread'll be a 20 page long correspondence (something to rival "Correspondence of Thieves" even) of our silly project :joke:.
Too bad fall college classes start up next week .

Busy, busy, busy, yes. I may have an opportunity coming up that will allow me to dig through the CD's. We'll see.
The reason I brought up the possibility of places and things was to keep in mind Bukary's initial request. We've given Bukary quite a bit to start with to begin translating into Polish. Yes, the detail may overwhelm the project and burn us out. Just do what you can, Deadman, I'll work on the rest of it. Maybe someone else will help out, too. Someone else might add their two cents and write a better introduction than I. I fully expect--from what I've seen with other projects--a flood of critiquing once our fellow taffers see the first page.:thumb:

WOW! I was away for a week and what do I see? :thumb:
Deadman & jtr7, thanks for everything!
And one more thing: it would be great if you compiled all kinds of names in THIEF: not only persons, but also book titles, organizations, guilds, places... everything.

And one more thing: it would be great if you compiled all kinds of names in THIEF: not only persons, but also book titles, organizations, guilds, places... everything. We'll try, Bukary ;). I actually thought someone would have to PM you to let you know about all that was going on in your thread :p. I think we're trying for every place name, organizational name (yes, and guild names), and important item name. I still don't know that we should have any name of an item or weapon Garrett uses except all but the most exotic (or those with mysterious and wondrous texts talking about them). May jtr7 will want to do that =p.
And just as an aside, you don't mind that I'm doing most of the work in M$ Access, do you jtr? It looks neater than my list in Word, has nice little check boxes for (T1?, TG?, T2?) and can be sorted in various ways. I'll have to see whether it can be exported to other formats though.. Otherwise I'd have to copy all the stuff one entry at a time (well, one field at a time) in case you don't have this program or don't like the idea. I got to Basso and Cutty yesterday, but I fear my descriptions of them aren't entertaining or witty . I guess you can re-write what you feel like; of course I wasn't really trying to be 'witty', what with all the Cragscleft prisoners cropping up (I'm doing it chronologically [by level] out of ease, to be sorted alphabetically when finished) in that area. Then there's the forgetfulness from not having played either game through all the way in a long time. I'm sure after more texts and mentions of important characters come up (Basso, Cutty), I'll have to append append append. It's fun though. I must have an information-seeking nature as I always tend to start these ambitious projects in games. I tried to list every item and it's attributes from an online MUD a while back! Sadly, I didn't have enough money to buy many of the 'uber' equipment, so it was obviously a lacking database :laff:.
Anyway, no more rambling. Back to work .

You're very welcome, bukary.
Deadman, you may do your part in whatever format you'd like, with whatever program you'd like. :) At least it'll look good on your monitor and make things easier for you. When it comes time to offer the encyclopedia up, we'll put it in a format that works best for all. I sense a TTLG-poll thread... ;)
Do you find it easier to write witty or more matter-of-factly? With me it depends entirely whether I have an emotional investment or not in a character. Go with the flow (again, it's easier & quicker) then move on to the next entry.
Tomorrow evening I'll find out if the previously mentioned opportunity to dig through the CD's will open up for me. If so, I should have about a week to make some serious headway. It's a shame all of the work done by respected taffers, such as Grundbegriff, is becoming less accessible as links die. :(
I'm glad you're having fun, too, deadman.

Actually, my excuse is simply that I'm in "matter-of-factly" mode when doing all the other Cragscleft prisoners, and suddenly Basso and Cutty come along, so it's hard to change modes once I'm in a certain groove. I suppose it woud be best to be clear on whos doing what, or at least tell you how far I've gotten in terms of which names or missions I've done (if and when you get the chance to start up). I don't know how, but the work load could be split up between us somehow. By mission or alphabet (or some other way?), though I'd imagine splitting by mission would be the easiest, for obvious reasons.
Also, regardless if I've already done a famous name, you're welcome to add or change (or re-write entirely) as it suits you, if I haven't said as much before. I'm still in matter-of-fact mode it seems. :( If only emotional investment was involved; but alas, it's hard to switch modes back and forth from one entry to another.
Access exports to a few different formats, but none of them plain text or Word Document.. The closest is HTML, and that's just a table that looks kind of crappy (of course that may be because I chose the default template, and although I've done HTML often in the past, I wouldn't know how to make my own HTML template for Access ). So the question is whether I want the inconvenience now (crappy non-formatted plain text document) or later (being forced to export to HTML or copy/paste every field individually, unless there's a better way). It does look a lot better in Access. Can't we just force everyone who wants to see it to sell-out to The Man (Bill Gates)? ^_~
TTLG-poll, here we come! Now, or later, d'you think?

EDIT: It most certainly is Grandmauden road. Intriguing. Another reference to something from Thief II in Thief Gold! I guess they had the Angelwatch area already mapped out (or had names of potential places) at that time. Fair enough :D I wonder how much they had mapped out in detail - should be fun trying to pick up references in Thief 3

Darn.. You don't have PM support, jtr? I wanted to ask a question, though I guess it'll have to go here. What exactly do you think 'Thieves Reward' is?

Quintus' tomb completed today. Family complained, but they will pay our price. An expensive construction, but well planned. T'was fortunate for him we had space in the northwest corner. Several novices have complained of the noise, but they have not yet learned discipline. Ordered more lye. There come groans from the Thieves Reward, and the unrepentant oft do not lie easy."I sort of assumed it was some old burial ground of thieves, but why in the area of the Bonehoard (especially inside it) is beyond me. Especially seeing how it's sort of an exclusive burial spot.. Maybe the author was just speaking about one trap or other that they heard go off and it's been unofficially called the 'Thieves Reward'? I didn't write this down before because I was only interested with names of taffers and tafferettes.. I can only guess what it may have been. The mention of growns and 'unrepentant' not lying easy makes me think they're the undead reincarnations of thieves :erg: :scared:
