Almost official AD&D 2nd. Ed. Garrett stats available (sort of) - by The Magpie

I'll get to that in a moment, but first: Garrett as rendered by the (improved) Infinity Engine.
In a roundabout way, I've come across another work of (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121265) Dark Engine All Resolutions Hack author (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/member.php?u=43674) weak-ling, blessed be his name. I was reading Kieron Gillen's old (
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/?p=1479) Thief 4 rumor repetition article on RPS when I noticed a (
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/?p=1826)
Planescape: Torment article in their "new features" box. I went to the Gibberlings 3 web site, and (
http://www.gibberlings3.net/widescreen/) there it was.
Then, on a mostly unrelated tangent I was looking for the Garrett voice file saying "Just what the world needs... More e-mail." (Which I didn't find... does anyone have a link?) So while sifting through the (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/themes/) archives of The Circle, I saw Emil Pagliarulo's (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/themes/BG2Garrett2.zip) Garrett character for
Baldur's Gate II, as (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/showarchive.asp?month=11&year=2000) posted by Digi on November 16, 2000. And this file is the crux of this thread.
Now, much as I would like to install my still-unopened copy of BG2 (a friend once exclaimed, "You never
opened it? Good grief, that's like keeping a Rembrandt in your attic!") and enjoy it as Garrett in its newfound hi-res glory, I'm unfortunately prevented from doing so at this time. Else I'd have proudly posted the stats myself.
Instead, I'd like to know if any of you who
do keep a BG2 installation around could please take the trouble to post the "Garrett-esque attributes and equipment" hinted at by Emil. I've long wondered what kind of RPG stats Garrett would have, and since these are
* from a semi-offical source, and
* AD&D 2nd. Ed., a system I more or less know by heart,
this would give me a good feel of Garrett. Besides, I'd like to try and see these stats compared to the DromEd properties of various monsters, spells, etc.

Charisma 13 ?
Oh, common, now that´s humble... You don´t get a devoted fanbase with only charisma 13 :D
And it will be fun to see him pick-pocket Elminster.

Thanks a lot! Just what I wanted!

The "more email" thing is on the TG CD.
(I was informed of that wave file. The Goodies and Themes folders from TG aren't included in the downloadable TG distro from Trygames.)
Now, let's have a look at our Garrett's potential. I'll just type it out for posterity, in case somebody wants to copy it, or if TTLG survives ImageShack.
Code:

As Gambit noted, there is the matter of a Charisma score of 13. Which I somewhat agree with, all in all. I wonder if a Strength of 12 is a little much.
What I find very puzzling, OTOH, is a Hide in Shadows skill rank of 15. It's possible that Emil didn't have enough points to pour into it at level 8, but...
And hit points? How many shields does Garrett start with on Normal difficulty, again?

I was being a bit snarky about the charisma...
I personally think 13 is ok.
What I mean is that we love Garrett because we know who he is and we enjoy his clever sarcasm.
But if we were real people living in the City, we would not be very fond of him. He´s obviously not very social and he is certainly not trying to be loved and accepted. From all people he managed to interact and ally with, most were with him because of mutual interest, and not fondness.
------------------------------------
And Magpie is right, strenth 12 seems a bit much. But maybe we are looking at realism while this file reflects gameplay. You can´t win Baldur´s Gate only with sneaking so 12 is the minimum to survive and have some fun at BD2.

It is indeed a case of not having enough points at level 8. But I'm sure a master thief like Garrett would be higher than level 8, anyway. :)

13 Charisma? Judging by his personality, I would put him around 7 or 8. :laff: Garrett is an anti-hero after all - and I don't just mean it in the "kinda sinister, but cool" way. :D

Garrett is perhaps the most accomplished Thief in the AD&D Universe. Orphaned at a young age young Garrett was taken in by a secret society of mysterious individuals called The Keepers and taught their ways.
The Keepers mandate is to maintain a balance in a huge semi-industrial city simply known as The City. To this end they are rarely if ever seen by those not of their order as they use mysterious glyphs to conceal their presence and have the ability to become nearly invisible at will.
Garrett studied with The Keepers for many years before leaving the order. The Keepers had trained him to one of them but Garrett rebelled and chose to use his Keeper talents to rob from the rich and give to himself. Though his motives were self serving it soon became apparent to the rest of the Keeper Order that Garrett had a destiny that served The City as a whole, for as he went about his business his plans became intertwined with the plans of others who would do great harm to the general populace, namely a Pagan god named Constantine and a religious megalomaniac named Karras.
Garrett's most valuable skill is his ability to blend into the shadows. This allows him to pass almost unseen at night as he plys his trade. Garrett seeks to avoid direct or even indirect confrontation with his enemies, preferring to sneak by unnoticed. However if the need arises Garrett can use less than lethal or lethal attacks with devastating results. He carries an arsenal of defensive and offensive tools and weapons.
Garrett's armor class of 5 comes strictly from his dexterity bonus. He eschews the use of even leather armor.

Elminster: And the fate of the forgotten realms lie on you !
Garrett: Why fate always does that ? She never pays the rent !
Elminster: Now go reckless child ! Before our land is doomed !
Garrett: Alright... alright... heh
Elminster: ...
Elminster: Hey, WHO TOOK MY TAFFING PIPE ?!?

Well, that's just the thing, isn't it, that he isn't really a part of any of the (A)D&D universes. Conversion of Dark Engine gameplay to any existing RPG system would be difficult at best, but Emil (who possibly is one of the few people who would know what kind of stats the developers, role-players that they were and are, had in mind for Garrett) took a shot at it, as referenced above. I think maybe his stats reflected the Garrett we know from the games a tad more accurately. No offense. :)
