And look what happened to
them.
They made two fantastic RPGs and died.
Just like they were supposed to.

You're just mad 'cuz combat was broken in Arcanum.

I remember a few years back, when one of the writers at LEVEL magazine was whining about how
every new game was bragging with "the most realistic dynamic shadows ever seen". No worries, dude, we've got a new sales pitch now:

-Lots of girls and romance subplots. You'll meet tons of different girls on missions and yes you can bag them all.

Meh, Japanese PC games have featured that for eons.

It wasn't.

So, 20 strength and a dagger of speed was supposed to turn you into a doomsday weapon?
I liked Arcanum a bit, and every damn game should have fast combat mode, but the actual implementation was without a trace of balance.
And banging chicks in video games is only worthwhile if you get a souvenir "Bagged Her" card. Bonus point if you can use them in a card minigame.

Why the hell you need balance in a single player game?
And 20 Strenght was Epic. Yes, it was supposed to turn you into a doomsday weapon.

Damn, I'm replaying Arcanum at the moment. While I still like the game, there are a few things that are annoying me about it; most of it has to do with the slow as molasses character development. I don't have a ton of time these days, and I ended up trying to straddle classes, but the grind is terrible. You only get 5 character points to start, limited initial character stats cutomization, and only 1 character point awared per level -2 awarded at every multiple of 5- that are used for all skills/stats/spells/schematics/etc... Generally, you seem to have to nerf your character in some critical area in order to get some of the other skills that offer better options for quests. Right now, I'm trying to play a thief/technologist, but that means pouring a ton of points into dexterity, perception, intelligence, picklock, prowl, pickpocket, learned schematics, and then add combat skills on top of that. While I love the fact that is forces you to make tough choices, it a pain in the ass to get skills at a level where they are actually useful (rank 3).
To top it all off, I still have very little idea how the turn based point bar UI actually works.

it's similar to fallout except if you don't have enough points to perform an action you can still do it.

What the hell is this? Thats what EVERY new action rpg says. Not a damn one of them has yet to deliver, and i'll be hornswaggled if the lower-primates at obsidian do.
