I played Bloodlines twice with just the official patch, never had an issue. I've considered trying one of the unofficial patches, but it looks like there isn't one without some degree of "this is what the developer intended" added to it, rather than pure bug fixes.
Just use Wesp5's patch and don't check the Plus option.

Actually, he should try tessmage's patch (tessmage.com downloads section). The guy can come across like a douche, but his patch really is the very best one for VTM:bloodlines.
Take this from someone who considers that game to be the top two best RPG's ever created (along with System shock 2), and has spent many hours behind it.

It really is too bad how unpolished the game turned out, especially considering how long Sega held it back. I kind of figured that Obsidian weren't working on it much during the delay, and had moved onto New Vegas.

Patches won't fix console gameplay mechanics.

all of the above is true. this game stinks. still, I love it. It's the combination of "what-could-have-been" and the illusion of an dynamic story and the included timed responses. And I agree that Thornton's "suave" options are sexist and dumb, but, hey - that's what James Bond was as well and imo he is as "interesting" or "boring" as male Shepard. I go for professional or aggressive. I would have liked to see a mixture of "normal" conversations and "forced/timed" ones. But I already had a few "key" moments where new characters respond to acts I did before (without me paying much attention to THAT detail) and was glorious. A tense face-off of smarts in a cafe surrounded by enemies, all ready to shoot me if I do something wrong ended with me getting information, impressing my opposite and leaving the scenery without a fight - that was awesome :)

I'm hoping it gets better, but it is so very, very flawed. I wanted to love it and my heart sank when I realised I couldn't.
The good: Skills, conversation dynamics, Clearing house, Silent take downs feel gratifying, stealth is relatively hard to do properly, which is as it should be.
The bad: Hacking minigame, forced third person camera, camera glitches leaving you not knowing which way you are facing sometimes, no jump / mantle / climb - everything dictated by "hot spots" indicated by yellow icons, lacklustre combat, automata guards following super specific routes - I thought we'd moved past that.. I could go on. I will stick with it, but I don't feel as though I'm getting a return on my investment in terms of money or time just yet.

note to self: don't forget to put skill points in at least one weapon category, or you will get stuck in a boss-fight without having the faintest idea of chance.....and all the cool stealth skills are worthless.

Just got this today and played it for about one hour or so. I like it and I can't really complain much because I traded an old copy of Septerra Core and one of Drakensang - The Dark Eye with a friend for this game (a bargain if you ask me... especially since I'm not too fond of Drakenang). Obviously he hates Alpha P. ... for some reason. The only thing that bugs me from time to time is the camera that just decides to slide away like crazy and confuse me, but other than that I find it pretty good. Well, maybe I wouldn't be of the same opinion if I had paid the full amount of cash for it, but still, some of the reviews are just harsh.
I went with the Recruit profile from the beginning. I was tempted to take a stealthy approach, but I realized soon enough (well, after a few tries with the beginning enemies) that it's just not worth it. That being said, I just left stealth where it was (since a little bit of sneaking training never hurt anyone) and looked at other more techy skills. Enjoying it so far; hope it will at least maintain this level of fun.

e.g. brayko
i defeated brayko with 3 points in pistol and it's boring. you practically evade/shadow sneak in circles. and if you evade the moment he does his "blinding" thing you can bug out the confrontation and the additional enemies do not spawn. any time he goes coke activate shadow and hide. this way it takes ages but you can keep the stealth gameplay. I had to retry 12 times on hard. at least 6 tries ended prematurely because the camera spazzed out and Brayko cut me down from behind. Another stupid thing: if I have a skill that says: KNOCKDOWN and STUN 100% why does it not work in a bossfight... LAME. sis:
the fight against SIS was very easy. As a soldier I used shotgun+roomsweeper and she was down in ~ 3 seconds. as a stealth guy you need to kill those 2 other assholes with chainshot first. then it is just having a lot of ammo. Or you can - like I did - shoot down the armor, use endorphin, activate fury and karate chop the shit out of her, take cover, repeat 2 times and she is down.sie: didn't wanna fight her ;)
but believe me, there will be other situations where you will hate taking the stealth route. This game should be called Alpha Commando of constant bloodshed. there is no spy in AP.
Still, I did have a dream where DeusEx, VampireBloodlines and AlphaProtocoll had a menage-a-trois

in my case it is Marburg that is bugging me. i didn't bring the shotgun with me, and have 0 points in pistol and assault rifle (i wanted to re-assign my 3 shotguns to assault rifle, but somehow failed at the only possibility to do so). tried the mission a second time with the shotgun, but then got slightly frustrated by the 3rd person perspective which really isn't meant for heavy-action shooting IMHO (and i generally suck at shooters).
so after about 20 or so attempts i decided to go to another location for the time being, and return to him at a later point.
