I'd hesitate to call her stupid, I think substance abuse issues can emerge in a person regardless of their intelligence. Perhaps there's even something in intelligence that is quenched by drugs, but that's just speculation.
I also felt shocked & not surprised at the news. My first reactions were something like condemnation that media and culture should somehow glorify these destructive personalities, when really these people should be helping themselves. I think the kind of success someone like Amy Winehouse earned is a bit of a positive reinforcement to their substance abuse- it's okay keep doing what you're doing everyone loves it! Even if what they're doing is being a pissed drunk ponce and becoming tabloid fodder.
Cause of death is still unexplained- I wonder if this is going to be one of those cases where the police say, you know, it's just better to leave it...unresolved. You can't dust for vomit.
