An alternative Minecraft server.

Okay so.

When necival.com was down, a bunch of us got together and discussed the possibility of setting up our own server. It'd be pretty simple, really -- just straight up average MC server. No big deal, right?

Well then necival came back up and we shelved the idea.

Then, well, drama that had already started before the server went offline turned into, well, you know. Lots of toys thrown out the pram.

So I decided fuck it, new server. I set up with Avante Hosting after some research, and so for the next month we have a new server to play with. Everyone on the old server is allowed on the new one -- yes, that includes Tony and his friends. (Not included: passing_by.) Duck, Renz, Sulphur, and Bob are all mods, as is my friend Terese. There's plenty of room to build in, so I don't want to hear any property disputes.

A word of warning: I'm still getting used to how the server's set up. You're all whitelisted, but there seems to be a disconnect between the game and the server and I may have to add you all manually via Multicraft. If this happens, let me know.

This is all very new territory for me, and I'll be picking it apart over the next week or so. With my job at the Enquirer ending, I'll have the time for it. ;)

This server's up for the next month, and it's got 32 players max. If the server is a success, I'll cover the next two months, but from then on it's gonna be a communal experience, so prepare to pony up. The price is about $17/mo, but if I add a MySQL server it'll be another $4, I think. Avante has good ratings, and we seem to be doing well for ourselves, so... we'll find out what happens.

I expect any disputes between players to be handled between them. If things get out of hand, a mod or I will step in, but I think we can keep things civil. Right?

A note about plugins: I've currently got the chest privacy plugin that Tony used, as well as two anti-creeper plugins. Creepers now only spawn between 0 and 40 (I think 40, no more than that), so watch your ass when mining diamond. They also no longer do environment damage. There were some other things in the one plugin I'm not sure about, so if you go to the Nether and there's no Ghasts, or you don't see any Endermen, let me know and I'll fix.

I'll be adding more plugins here and there. For now that's the basics.

And by the way, the first world was deleted by accident. Hope you weren't TOO far into your projects guys. There is a pine forest nearby, though.

... and creeper nerfing isn't taking hold...

I think I fixed it, let me know. Misread a config file; creepers will show up aboveground, but they shouldn't damage the environment. And they'll burn in the sunlight, hopefully. (Spiders too.)

Pardon my naivety, but what is wrong with anodal? Multiplying the servers won't help drive the hosting costs down, plus the server I'm running already has a map, backup and hasn't crashed since forever. And it's as vanilla as it can get, plus I could use a few admins to handle updates and eventual plugins.

I'm not here to piss in the broth but... why?

Hes not a fan of anodal. Anywho, he's the only one whose banned from my server. And despite the fact that I dont think anyone would follow him, I still dont think this serves the community.

Therefore, I extend my sincerest apology to dethtoll and those offended by the flamewar. I would welcome him back into the server and would even restore the gameworld to before any damages were done were it to appease him. I see no reason for the server to split up.

More over, I hereby resign all of my administrative powers over to kanchi, who will take my place as the day to day admin. The only reason Necival isnt the day to day admin is that he doesnt have that much time to devote to the game.

So to recap: I apologize to dethtoll, I apologize to the community, all damages sustained can be rolled back, my admin powers will be revoked (I will however still be in charge of development/deployment of plugins), and everyone can live happy ever after.

There it is! Dont split up the community. If you really hate my server, go play on Anodal. There is no need for three servers.

He's not a fan of how I treated him, but that has little to do with the host itself. I would have given him admin rights and a clearance to install any mod he wants as long as everyone is ok with it.
It's true that two servers is enough. If dethtoll feels like doing all the admin tasks on his own - and I would understand it since he already paid for it - I'm going to try to redirect the current users of anodal onto his server (we'll see if we can move some stuff from there), because I don't really feel like paying for something that people don't consider using (I'm saying this without any negative feelings).

Anodal was great when it first started; I had loads of fun in that first world. It was my first experience of minecraft after all - lol at me mining shitloads of gravel thinking it was brilliant! At the moment, Necival is my main focus because since its been up, it's reignited my interest in minecraft and I'd hate to abandon stuff I've built, however shitty, because of the time I've put into it. I genuinely appreciate the resources, time and money that each of the server admins puts into their servers, but there is no way I can demonstrate that appreciation because there is no way I can take part in all three servers.

I gotta say I'm reasonably gutted that such a rift occured on necival because I liked that chat and banter, I liked seeing what folks created, I liked trying (badly!) to spy on passing_by from a distance to see if he was the one luring creepers into folks homes, and I liked the resulting witchhunt; the sly, subtle conversations to ascertain guilt or how he should be dealt with. I liked seeing the safehouse project coming along, the emergence of a massive platform in the sky surrounded by waterfalls. I liked seeing the screenshots of huge underground caverns and gorges that folks (as I understand it) discovered from cooperative exploration. Now of course, these things would be recreated on any of the three servers, but theres something about it being a shared experience and subsequent discussion relating to a world that makes playing on a server worthwhile. Dividing that shared experience into three contingents diminishes the overall value of any experience (for me at least).

I'm not going to comment either way on the disputes because I've not been involved and certainly don't want to be. I don't know if it will ever be possible to unite as one minecraft group again. Obvious Alch + friends have put money into their server, Dethtoll has paid for at least a month for his, and Bri has admirably kept Anodal's minecraft server ticking away out his own wallet

Listen, I would like it if we stuck to one server too. Keep in mind, in so far as "rift", the only person I banned was dethtoll. Nothing constructive can come from reanalyzing the situation, but as I said I apologize and unbanned him, and things can go back to how they were, Im not going to be an admin anymore on Necivals server. I hope you guys can take that and run with it. I am willing to choke on my ego and every las word, if to preserve the community. I was wrong in every way, and id like deth to stay on the server. Again, I cant stress this enough, I wont have any admin power because obviously I abuse it weather I realize it or not!

Apology accepted. And I apologize for the junkie thing.

I'm not sure I can really go back right now -- I did pay for a month for this server so I'm going to see how it works out. You of course are quite welcome, just let me figure this whitelist thing out. And I like BH's idea of moving stuff from anodal.

Server's down for maintenance so hopefully it'll be back up before I have to leave.
