The reason to change it is to allow for a wider range of playstyles and thus a wider appeal.
If I knew that it would be a successful game no matter how narrow the options I'd opt for much less, and would want it to be much, much harder.

That's great, but other than that trip-wire, I don't remember many non-lethal options being mentioned.

The garrote is the only new tool I've suggested that is a certain killer.
