An idea for pleasing the fans and pleasing the new blood. - by SubJeff

Well stated, mothra. I completely forgot how wrong a game can go without proper balancing.

tBM you either haven't read what I've said or you aren't taking it in.
EM can make the purest Thief experience they like but to appeal to a wider audience options are always good. Yes, my suggestions ALLOW for a step away from pure stealth, but to suggest they would make it a violence fest is just silly. Do I really have to describe how the new tools would allow for different approaches in specific situations? Garrett should be as vulnerable in melee as he always was. The garrote allows for specific actions and it has penalties associated with its use. Not to mention you couldn't use it on Expert unless on defined enemies.

Cross-bows are definitely not too modern - since they were already in use in T2 (Mechanists). Firing speed - depends on the crossbow - a chinese repeater crossbow can be reloaded in a similiary way like a pumpgun, it also has a kind of magazine for the bolts - not much louder than a bow too... not too bad an option for its easier to aim too.
I always think, it would be good too add in more options. Options is part of Thief - lockpick or smash-in the door... kill or not.
But a garrotte or "fiber wire" (for the Hitman players^^) is pretty far off from what Garrett stands for. I think implementing this is way too brutal... I mean a swordfight still got something "robin hoodish" but strangling someone is too much of the assassin's trade.

If you're going to that pedantic then what about back stabs? And FYI the injuries caused by a real blackjack are potentially fatal, braindamaging or permanently paralysing.
FriendlyStranger on 19/5/2009 at 13:47
I didn't mean to be pedantic - actually I don't see where I could have been, but OK...
"Back stabs" of course are also absolutely unthiefy - it's something assassins do, but not master-thieves. The fact one has to explain such things, makes me fear the horrid decisions EM could make with T4 - if such obvious misinterpretations can occur, lets not even think about what can happen to the more subtle Thief aspects in context of such ideas...
To the topic "injury in reality" - no one said that anything in Thief is realistic. Look I cannot even remember when the priest from the church up the street threw fireballs the last time...

OK, so why not get rid of the normal, hard, expert mode thing and just tally up a score like in SWAT 4? I can see how this might break the flow of game play, but it would punish players for missing an opportunity. In this system, if the player stabs a guard's face in instead of sneaking around, he loses points. Losing too many points results in failure.

proposal rejected *g*
I think that restricts the player too much. The score idea limits you in your freedom how to play the game - while the normal, hard, expert just adds challenges.

Yes, I just choked on my coffee! :laff:
I think options are a good thing. Make expert level the no kill zone. Allow a bit of mayhem on easy level. No BFGs, but allow people to experience a stealthy kill. This could very well encourage some of the FPS crowd to try Thief, love it as we do, and become stealth masters. Someone who is the kind of player who would 'get' Thief and stick with it for another 10 yrs would be challenged to perfect stealth & master the expert challenges.
I have to say though, I'm not sure if
I would ever use a garrote. (BTW~a gavotte is a dance.;))

:thumb: true, but it would fit better into Thief than a garrotte.

Dance them to death? Hmm...is that what happened to the dancing zombies?
