It seems strange that someone in a religious institution can have the title of inspector. Priest, high priest, brother, nun, hammerite, all these make some sense. But inspector ?
Is there anything related at the catholic church ? Maybe those priests who need to investigate if miracles are true or not so that deceased priests and nuns can become a saint? Or maybe priests that use the vatican observatory to study astronomy. Or someone that is part of the pope´s own science team (yes, the pope has a science team, mainly jesuits).
What do you think Inspector Drept main job at his faction was ? Apart from looking after the hag ?

Well, the Hammers tolerated his inspecting job, but they didn't approve, so I don't think it was a Hammer position. It was definitely personal. The Order of the Hammer gave his life structure, but all he wanted was to avenge his friend Lauryl.

AFAIK there are agents for sects and of course heresy, inquisition etc. in the Catholic Church. Or were there. If Drept was some kind of Hammerite Dominican, I think that's quite plausible.

'Tis no sin, Brother Griswald....
SM1DreptAndFactions_002000, m12c1402:
No sin, but 'tis not The Builder's work...he cavorts with common city folk and he comes not to services....
SM1DreptAndFactions_003000, m12c1403:
Brother Drept hast permission to scour the City for this murderer, this hag, which he hast sought these many years....
SM1DreptAndFactions_004000, m12c1404:
Thou hast just reminded me of another thing! He hast asked to be called Inspector Drept...not Brother...surely 'tis not allowed?
SM1DreptAndFactions_005000, m12c1405:
'Tis a transgression indeed, but none that worries me overmuch, Brother Griswald....
SM1DreptAndFactions_006000, m12c1406:
Then hearken to one more grievance, Brother Mendon. That he has spent much time in the aiding of a known thief and non-believer, a heathen to be sure, the very thief that didst steal the Chalice from Saint Edgar's....
SM1DreptAndFactions_007000, m12c1407:
This too I know. 'Twas Brother Drept's own idea to enlist Garrett in aiding our cause. Only time will tell if 'twas right to do so. 'Tis not for us to judge...not yet.
SM1DreptAndFactions_008000, m12c1408:
Then thou wiltst not call him for penitence? No flogging? No mail shirt? Nothing?
SM1DreptAndFactions_009000, m12c1409:
May the Builder see fit to guide us to the right path, if we have stumbled onto the wrong, Brother Griswald...but I wilt not punish my own...not when the forces of the Trickster do surround me in the night.

Yes, but was that conversation actually used ingame?
DJ Riff on 6/10/2008 at 13:28
Yes, there're two Hammers talking outside the Clocktower.
Gambit on 6/10/2008 at 14:27
Wow.
So it´s clearly a title he gave to himself.
That´s quite an independent hammerite!
I don´t know why but he seems a very cool character, surviving hell at childhood and all.

That might be a bit strong, based on the conversation it's really just one guy (Griswald) that disapproves, right? Seems like others (like Mendon) just kind of accept it for what it is.
More importantly, it seems that the higher ups within the Hammer Order are the ones that approve of Drept's work as Inspector (based on the "hast permission" comment).

tis true . . . tis true

I meant it in the way that the Keepers tolerate Garrett, the Hammers tolerate Garrett, and the pagans tolerate Garrett...but do not approve. And by approve I don't mean authorization. That's a separate aspect from what I mean. I mean they don't like it at all, but they have reasons to stay their hands from administering justice. They are having visions or strong gut-feelings or reading the prophecies and finding powerful reasons to hold off.
'Tis a transgression indeed.
Mendon may simply trust his leaders, while Griswald is being cautious. Mendon agrees Griswald is correct, but may also have more knowledge. He may be generally phlegmatic while Griswald is more by-the-holy-book. It can go many ways, but both agree Drept is breaking a rule or two.
In the final week of the Hag and the Keepers, all the factions are keenly aware that something bigger than them is going on, though they cannot specify what it is. Drept is the one Hammer who is most attuned, and Dyan is the one pagan most attuned, and Artemus is the Keeper most attuned.
I don't think MasterForger Greidus's personal need to pass a test, barred for 50 years, to dispel doubt of his spiritual purity or prove his impurity with death, is a coincidence. He's allowed Drept to seek out the Hag and put off Hammer ritual, and depending on player choice, he's allowed Garrett to live and offered some level of freedom to the master thief within their territory. Greidus needs to know he's wrong or right, and he needs to show his charges which is the case, so they can make the correct decision. Of course, he doesn't know what Garrett's and Drept's actions will culminate into.
