What do you guys think of creating a level that anyone can work on for a while, then post their changes and let someone else have a turn to mess around, change whatever, then post their changes and let someone else have a go?
We'd have to establish some rules for working on it though, this is what I was thinking:
1. Any aspect of the level is allowed to be changed, but try to be mindful of others' work by moving or enhancing, rather than deleting things you don't like.
2. Anyone may claim the chance to work on the level, but only one person works on it at a time to avoid multiple versions.
3. The ability to work on the level may be claimed with a forum post, if no one is currently working on the level.
4. Once claimed, you have the next 72 hours to work on the level, after which you must post a download link to your changes.
5. If you don't like your changes, or decide not to work on it after all, edit your post so it says "Pass," letting others know no one is currently working on the project, and it's available for someone else to work on it.
What do you guys think? Terrible idea?

The Chain Project was basically like this. A second one as started a few years ago - anyone who participated know what happened to it?

Yeah, I still have it, but only about 3 people responded - there didn't seem enough interest to carry it on. :(
If this is something authors are interested in now, I'm happy to start sending the thing round,
but there have to be some ground rules about how long folks can keep it, otherwise it just gets bogged down for ages.
Edit: Some more info - it was based on Asylum's abandoned Heist Society 2. It's got sections by me, Vlad Midnight and Random Taffer so far. There's a thread with a few screenies here: (

Good luck with the 24 hours restriction! I suggested something similar for the chain project and the thing took ....I think about two years!

I'd be up for this once Fables is done (almost there). I'm planning a week off in November so perhaps the timing will work out.

Is everyone free to add whatever comes to his/her mind or should you stick to a major plan?
E.g. if the theme is something like "We're building a huge mansion!" or "Let's build a nice city!"...

As Nick said, it's based on AsyluM's abandoned Heist Society 2, which was a city hall building. It's a pretty awesome raw mission, with giant rooms and pretty intense architecture. It was already pushing the limits though, as I recall, so I wonder if only part of it was kept as the starting point?

It'd probably be a good idea to set a theme and even a target date for release. I wasn't thinking this would be a massive two year project, just a fun diversion for FM authors from their normal projects. That's why there'd be a 24 hour limit. Work on it a few hours, then turn it back over for someone else. An extension wouldn't be bad to allow if someone felt it necessary to finish up some stuff before turning it over.
I'm thinking a city would be good for the setting, that way people's ideas could be integrated without seeming out of place. Like if someone wanted to do a small mansion, someone else a factory, and someone else something more urban, it wouldn't be too difficult to integrate.
Since Halloween is coming up, why not aim for a Halloween release? Something kinda eerie, but not necessary undead, more like Calendra's cistern?
The gameplay format could be more or less a shopping list mission, composed of little side quests.

With CP2 I tried to give it a bit more structure than CP1 but still leave it wide open. The storyline is basically that Garrett's been captured by an organisation of super thieves who will let him join their ranks if he can complete all of the tasks set for him by their members (the members being the mission authors). So you can build anything based on that, and then go to the end when all the objectives are done.
Also, Yandros, I basically left everything in except the massive game-crashing library. Reduced most counts by about half and left a lot of dead-end corridors for people to build off.

Is that the one with the huge dome at the start point? I think I still have a copy of that somewhere. That would make a REALLY nice base.
