Just picked up this game and only played an hour or so. I've just levelled up, I think, and it was suggested that I upgrade my lockpick ability. Problem is I can't figure out how to do it. I read the manual and it doesn't mention anything about upgrading skills that I can find.
Any help appreciated.

You won't be able to upgrade Boots' lockpick skill until much later in the game. Just make sure you help out Detective Rukh each time you meet him (he's in the Anachronox Tours area at first).

Every playable character has a "world skill" that can be at two levels-- the basic starting level, and a "master" level. Master level for all characters is optional, and is achieved by talking to a certain person, finding a certain item, etc. Grumpos's is a pain in the ass because there's a few NPCs who can be yammered with absolutely no indication that they can be-- one of whom is essential to gaining his master-level skill.
Basically, you should talk to every NPC you see, and keep talking to them until they start repeating themselves. And do it again after each major plot progression. You get all kinds of swag and side quests this way.
