Infrequently as I may post, I still care about TTLG as much as you guys do. I'm content, most of the time, to just read discussions when I don't have anything to contribute to them. The result of this is you all may not know who I am, but I know who you guys are, and for most of you, I appreciate and enjoy your participation here. I'm sure I'm not the only one like this, either.
Indeed you are not the only one.
I don't think it's right to call this forum "essentially dead" or even dying. I've seen forums that are far less active than this (like maybe a few to a dozen people visit it in a day) and have been going in that rate for like 6+ years or something (still going). Now
those forums are half dead, but even those are still kicking. I may not have been around in ttlg's early flourishing years, yet still there is nearly always a thread or two (or more) I'm interested to see and new discussion being had on most of them every day (I visit multiple forums). And I haven't really noticed any declining activity either. I think it might even be better this year than in some of the previous years. No? At least in the Thief-themed forums. Newdark really was an unheaval for me and many others.
Were the forums so active in the early 2000s that now it's comparatively dead, as some like to say? Not that I was here then, but I suspect they were about as active then as they are now. Maybe a little more so. Interested to see if it would indeed live another 15 years. Then being registered in 2008 wouldn't seem
that "new" anymore.
Bye dethtoll, I somehow managed to miss most of your legendary badness, but most of the posts I did read from you I found somewhat fun. But the others are probably are right about you. I like commchat these past few years (I didn't at first - people seemed mean/edgy) so either I simply liked your posts or I missed your bad posts.
Nice one, ZylonBane. :thumb:
Sorry for my simplistic english. Maybe one day I will be able to speak half as fancy as most of you buggers.

Thor, you also have to keep in mind that forums in general have somewhat died off over the past decade....replaced by #retweets, posting endless selfies in the futile quest for "likes", sharing pictures of cats on facebook, and partisan sheep screaming insults at each other in comment sections.
The nature of dialogue on the internet has changed and we are all dumber as a result.
Thor on 4/8/2014 at 16:16
Haha, very aptly put. Those are the only worst things about the new social trends, though. I've noticed a few good or at least decent discussions in a youtube video comment section as well. True - only a small minority. And I'm sure twitter/facebook minorities use it for something useful too (spreading some good stuff or decent self advertising). I hope forums don't disappear though, cause I like 'em better... and they're more comprehensive and valuable in their content imo. The only people that can rival (or in some cases maybe even top) that are people that make worthwhile youtube videos.

Dethy could be frustrating sometimes but he's a good guy and I wish him well.
Losing him and regaining CCCTarantula certainly isn't a net improvement.

Why does there have to be such a final and dramatic goodbye? This is a message board, not a marriage or a job. I've never understood why people who get burned out on this place don't just limit their exposure to it. Come by once a week instead of daily. Post once a month, and/or only when you see something that's personally of interest to you. This drama queen stuff is for amateurs.
But specific to dt? I completely respect your game knowledge, and you’re obviously an intelligent person. You have a ton to offer TTLG, but unfortunately you have anger issues. You don’t know how to debate and interact with other people in a normal way. I’m guessing this crosses over to real life, and is partially the reason why you can’t find work. You think people here chastise you because you're vocal, but that's wrong. It's because you're rude and abusive, and I (and I'm sure many others here) have no tolerance for that.
Look how polite and civil your first couple of posts were (Btw, you fucked up the link in the OP), and then look at your last few posts. Not exactly evolution.
Others above have summed up the rest pretty well, so no need to keep beating that horse. That said, you're welcome back anytime, as far as I'm concerned. But trust me, I know you don't want to believe it, but TTLG will survive just fine whether you're here or not.

Why the long goodbye? Because short ones are so impersonal. And as a form of cathartic closure, why not? It's been ten years, and he's been around for most of them when he wasn't sent on an enforced holiday or stopping up sewage lines with nuclear dykes.
In any case, it's not an improvement to see people leave, no matter how many sighs of relief some may be breathing. I do hold it to all of us to improve the signal to noise ratio as a community, no matter if it's a few people around, or a lot. And that's why I'd like to see our voices of reason hold forth with the intelligent discourse - you know who you are; no matter how much I'd like to drop names, it wouldn't be fair - and plaster over the cracks, because by golly do we have a lot of cracks. The members forum needs to be at a level of intelligence higher than it is currently, despite some valiant efforts.
Also, where the fuck did our edgy sense of humour go.

Well, I'll miss him. Sure, he could be abrasive, but we've got no shortage of that around here, and I can help but feel this is the flint blaming the steel for causing the sparks.

Brethren - the bit about carrying over into the personal life and not finding a job is a bit uncalled for. You can't chastise someone for being mean-spirited and then flick them in the nuts with a wet towel.

We all know each other just enough to actually hurt each other, and we're all to varying degrees just narcissistic enough, just petty and childish enough, that we think we can win debates by hitting the other person where it hurts most. I've done it. We've all done it.
I haven't. :)

And the reason I laugh is because to those who know me, I am possibly the most non-violent person of all. I have championed peace for the better part of my life, which has now lasted 40 years. Sometimes, I start drooling and foaming at the mouth while talking about outdated classic crpgs. However, never has that translated into violence towards others. lol Just kidding around now, but yeah.. gonna miss you man. You said all those things so that I didn't have to. Don't think that I haven't read each and every post of yours, and gone back and reread from the start a handful of times over the years. Do whatever you want.

I don't think it was malicious, I think he was trying to help Dethtoll.
