I had a look at (
https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=151176&p=2505859&viewfull=1#post2505859) and youtube then showed me a thumbnail for a "Kingpin" reboot trailer, so I watched that too out of curiosity, and it looks
awful.
They have "before" and "after" splits in the video where you can't see any appreciable differences (partly because it's not identical gameplay in each split, and partly because the choice of footage is terrible). Most astonishingly of all they haven't fixed the infamous jello-powered facial animation (which was
easily the worst-looking thing about the original game). Instead, the developers were apparently under the impression that a lack of giant rotating dollar signs was the critical flaw in the original which needed to be rectified. It's really bizarre.
Not that I ever wanted to play Kingpin again; but if anyone had been looking forward to this I think they're going to be pretty disappointed.
You can find it amongst other new trailers here: (

Well don't leave us in suspense man, post the vid!

Yeah I had to rewind the footage and look again to see what I missed. I guess the new version has slightly higher res textures? Not that I'm sure that needed fixing, the main thing that struck me about Kingpin back in the day was how high res all the textures were. Oh, and the Cypress Hill soundtrack. Checkmate foo!
Also, Graven has a release date: January 23. Has anyone here played the EA recently? How is it?

This Realms Deep has been good PR for the highly criticised 3DR. We've finally got release dates long standing early access games Wrath, Graven and the Kingpin remaster. SiN remaster is still MIA though.
Ion Fury expansion Aftershock is finally out tomorrow.

Ion Fury's sequel, Phantom Fury, has a demo out. Gotta say that the "faux retro low-res textures" trend in these throwback shooters have gotten really old.

Twisted Tower may have Bioshock-esque aesthetics, but clearly the gameplay looks like Doom Eternal copypasta. Not necessarily a bad thing, of course.

I gave Prodeus a try on the XBox before it was taken off the Game Pass at the end of last month. The game sort of sums up my thoughts of every modern "boomer shooter" that I've played so far. Prodeus is a decent game with smooth gameplay, fairly neat old-school graphics, and some cool music, but I'd still rather play the original DOOM over this any day. I can't name too many things that are wrong with Prodeus, but I think that its worst crime is that it's just being too faithful to the old classics. For example, why imitate the annoying keyhunt level design when that was/is the worst part of these games? The guns lack some serious oomph too, and the enemies aren't particularly fun to fight against.
I only played Prodeus for a couple of hours, but I felt that I had seen pretty much everything that the game has to offer after the first fifteen minutes.

I've enjoyed most of the ones I've played, but Amid Evil is the only one that came close to Quake for me. Dusk is mostly great but it had some pointless gimmicks and some areas that just weren't fun at all.

Prodeus is definitely the worst of these type of games in my book. It doesn't bring anything new to the table beyond much noisier graphics and hard-to-read environments.
I'm most excited for more Cultic.

Cultic is just perfect as it is, so yes, bring more chapters :D

I've found the arena gunplay and the overemphasized feedback in Prodeus to be rather fun, this is the closest to modern DOOM games that I'm willing to go. I'm not a huge DOOM fan in general but I'm having a good time with original and custom levels in Prodeus, it's competent at making the player manage their weapons and plan their movement ahead.
Regarding key hunts and proximity to the classics, I see these as elements of language for an art form where what really matters is level design (visual design, flow, blocking, originality) and good item/enemy placement. If you're not here for the latter, the former will look extremely formulaic and dated. I can endlessly play new Quake maps because it's a way for me to experience the skill and vision of a level designer, even if I almost always have to ultimately pick up silver and a gold keys to progress past the same door brush.
+1 for Amid Evil being the closest to Quake and my overall favourite. People love Dusk too but I just can't get past the art direction.
As for recent releases, now is a great time for Build Engine-inspired stuff! The free Cultic mini-episode is nice and so is Ion Fury Aftershock, and I'm looking forward to trying The Last Exterminator.
Did anyone go through the EA for Fortune's Run? How does it hold up? This was my highest-anticipated retro shooter until I saw it was a 3-level early access and not the full thing. Way to kill my interest.
