I think it some of this stems from the fact that a game like Crysis is marketed as the next-gen uber graphical awesomesauce. Then the average-internet-joe, who can't play the game due to hardware limitations, pass it up as a glorified tech demo.

"Glorified tech demo", I'm sick of that non-argument when its applied to commercial games. As far as I'm concerned, it's like invoking Godwin's Law, any credibility your stance on a topic once had goes straight out of the window.
"Glorified tech demo" is still more bearable than the "all graphics, no gameplay" one. :)

Y'know, the original Serious Sam demo literally was a glorified tech demo... and it was more fun than many of the actual games that get derided as such.

Yes yes yes yes yes.
It's absolutely because of how they marketed Crysis that the game is viewed by those who haven't played it as somehow being shallow.
Crysis is probably amongst the best singleplayer FPS games. It's extremely well done and everything about the gameplay is truly superb. Hell, even if you don't like the game you can at least agree that they pulled off the shooting combat really well.
Although you do have to man up and play it on the higher difficulties. You begin to use your suit powers, stealth, flanks, high ground, etc. as a necessity instead of simply as a diversion.

I have played Crysis. It's FarCry with a nanosuit. Pass.

Okay.
So what are the
real problems with the game?

Depth of gameplay or immersion of environment is true innovation, guys. Not how shiny your shiny things can shine.

True - but sometimes I don't want innovation. Sometimes I want a fun, perfectly polished, unoriginal game, just like sometimes I want a good hamburger or steak and chips, or sometimes I want an episode of
House, M.D. or even
Lost rather than
The Wire or
Six Feet Under.
I think we have a tendency here to undervalue the craft you can get in a relatively generic but perfectly polished game.

If you have to ask...

I'm wholeheartedly curious at this point, and not in a smug "BRING IT BIATCH" sort of way.
What are the problems with the combat?
