And Doom 3's per-pixel lighting was just there to show off, right? Contributing absolutely nothing to the atmosphere and sense of dread that the game designers aimed to deliver, combined with the sound design to deliver a complete package (that goes up several notches when using EAX4.0 effects.)?
I find it hilarious that your defense for Doom 3 not being a glorified tech demo is to list a bunch of it's technical abilities.
Yes, the tech was very nice. The
utilization of that tech in service of gameplay was sub par at best. Stumbling blindly around pitch black rooms and being killed by a monster closet doesn't contribute to atmosphere and dread, it contributes to frustration and annoyance. If id knew the first thing about actually generating and sustaining tension it might have worked. If it didn't have the stupid monster intros designed entirely to say 'LOOK! NORMAL MAPPING!' it might have worked. Everything about Doom 3's design, from levels (we can do dark tunnels, moderately large open areas, and crazy hellscapes with ground that materializes!), to lighting (real-time per-pixel lighting! Self-shadowing characters and objects!), to the PDA (It's an interactive animated texture mapped an object! Cool, huh?), is intended to show off different technical aspects of the engine. Hence: Glorified Tech Demo.

What's the point of this thread?
I thought it was a long established fact that Crysis is a glorified tech demo. Not really worth buying unless you have a best of a PC to show off to your friends.
Oh yes and Doom 3 was far more enjoyable than the rather unimpressive Crysis IMO.

Go back and study primary school reading comprehension, since you clearly failed it the first time around.

Plenty of arguments to contrary have already been stated, you waited far too late into discussion to start trolling and now you only look like a fool. Better luck next time.

All this talk of how Crysis plays on the higher difficulty has got me interested. I think once it drops in price a little I'll pick it up.

What made me laugh was the fact that UT2004 has a software renderer.
Hey I forgot about that too. I've even used it for kicks once. It is very good. Rad Tools Pixomatic, written partly by programming genius Michael Abrash who also helped write Quake actually.

Quake ran great for me on a 486 DX4 100 MHz laptop with an active matrix display (hell yeah!). Even if the screen was 9 inches, that was a great little gaming machine. Most laptops back then had GARBAGE dual-scan screens that smeared when trying to display fast movement. I saw laptops as fast as 533 MHz with craptastic dual-scan displays. I always wanted to know why someone would build a nice machine and put such a piece of garbage monitor on it.
I had a dual scan notebook that I played Descent and Mechwarrior 2 on. I can't remember how bad it was anymore but it undoubtedly would make the modern worriers of LCD response time rethink their thoughts on just what slow really is. :)

Well I tried semi-effectively to show that there have been many points in history when a game has come along that made once-amazing hardware become anything but. I think this is part of what makes people start complaining about gaming progress. Feeling the pain of needing to upgrade but not seeing the value of it. People have been calling various games tech demos since we moved past B&W.
A game that I would call a tech demo would be something like
Voxelstein or
kkrieger. Pouty bitchiness about a big game with many interesting gameplay aspects apparently non-apparent to some does not make a Tech Demo Game.

I'd say that it's more about how you have to play it than "how it plays". Instead of being a godlike superhero-ish fellow with not much of a risk to yourself (say normal difficulty), you are reduced to a soldier with a few technological advantages. You will die a lot more. Rambo-style gaming doesn't easily work out anymore. The enemies speak Korean instead of English, the guns behave differently, the crosshair goes away. If you like strategy in your shooters, the game is much more engaging.

Topical!
for a year ago, get with the programn. She's all better now and up to swaying along with famous ska hasbeens. Anyway crysis was pretty good, and very pretty. Jurassic Park in game format. Plot obviously made up by twats, buts that is hardly a rarity.

She's sober! ish! enough to sing ghost town anyway. Which isn't that sober, I admit.

This is why we're talking about GLORIFIED Tech Demos as opposed to ACTUAL Tech Demos.

How about (
http://www.mobygames.com/game/trespasser-jurassic-park) Trespasser: Jurassic Park? That's the only "GLORIFIED" one I can think up. That game sucks completely but has tons of cool technology and ideas. It's barely playable. I'd call it the definition of tech demo gaming.
However, there's actually still a fan community for it !!
