Oh you're so non-noncomformist.
Well, heh, I do shop at Hot Topic online from my Mac. That alone should tell you I have tastes a bit beyond the regular plebes of the world.

I can't stand this mentality of OH MAH GOSH THINGS ARE GOING BACKWARDS. People! Things have always been terrible!
Nah. Things are actually pretty good, and were actually pretty good in the past. For some reason, everyone seems to get off on thinking everything was better back in the day, and how this new group of blah is TOTALLY RUINING THEIR HOBBY! People were saying the exact same thing 10-20 years ago.

Reminds me of that thing about how people bitch about Christmas not being Christmassy anymore these days and how its all corporate bullshit etc, when people have been saying Christmas isn't like it used to be for a couple of hundred years.

To be fair my post was an indictment of the casual crowd and an industry that is increasingly ignoring us in favour of them. Maybe that's a bit NMA of me but I don't care. It's sickening, and it's a symptom of a larger issue that extends beyond video games.
Renzatic on 22/7/2009 at 22:16
I'm not seeing it. We've still got just as many interesting hardcore type games coming our way as we did before the big casual game craze hit hard. The only difference is that we've now got a much larger selection of puzzle games and whatnot to choose from.
You also gotta remember that games like Zuma and Peggle can be done by 3 or 4 talented individuals in the span of 5 months. Compared to something like Dragon Age or The Witcher, which takes 50-100 people (at least) 3 years to make, well...of course you're gonna be seeing alot more casual games coming out now that they're popular with the mom crowd. They're easy to make, and they're good money, but that doesn't mean they'll supplant the types of games we all know and love.

That remains to be seen.

While there's a market for hardcore games, there will be devs who fill that market. My main concern is whether the hardcore demographic is capable of accepting non-AAA quality. Casual games won't kill hardcore gaming, but hardcore gamers still might.

and thinks
Portal is the be-all end-all of video gaming is a filthy dirty heathen casual gamer and is the cancer that is killing video games

It's good but not great. And most certainly way overrated.
Also: Companion Cube. I can understand the song being popular (and people are still fucking singing it), it's cute and catchy, but the Companion Cube? What the fucking hell.

You better not be referring to film here because I'm fucking sick of people bemoaning the lack of quality film today just because Hollywood is stuck in a terminal loop of remakes and sequels. The film industry on the worldwide scale is doing splendidly; foreign film, indie fare, arty experiments have a much larger audience now then they ever did before and while the likes of
Transformers 2 aren't going to be going anywhere in a hurry Hollywood has actually produced some quality high-concept films itself lately too.
I think it's much the same with games as well. The mainstream stuff is mired in endless sequels and AAA turds but can still product the goods from time to time and the indie and foreign (read: Eastern Europe :)) game scenes are getting stronger with every year. Admittedly most indie games are currently limited to variations on the platform/puzzle genres but I think eventually we will see more other genres successfully tackled too (eg
Zeno Clash a good balance between indie design and AAA-like polish) with increasing graphical and technical fidelity. I have had no shortage of quality games to play this year and I have many more that I'm looking forward too (Just off the top of my head
The Void,
Resonance,
Mafia 2 and
Brutal Legend which pretty much covers all the bases ;)) .
