The companion cube is great because it's a blatant attempt to coerce the player and even though I was aware of it the whole time, the game kinda made me feel attached to it.
I never saw it as that. For me, it was a blatant attempt by GlaDOS to coerce the player character into feeling attached to the damn cube, and the joke was that GlaDOS completely misunderstands human beings, their emotions and attachments. "If I stick some hearts on it, the test subjects will be sure to love the companion cube!", that sort of thinking. It's yet another one of her delusions.

Yes indeed. To actually become attached to it seems to suggest a similar failure to understand human emotions on the player's part.

except that valve actually intended for the players to get attached to it, and also that so many of those players actually did
but yes you make good points. I anthropomorphize everything anyway.

To be honest, while some players may have formed an actual attachment to the companion cube (hey, I always felt guilty about using the nerve-cutter on drones in
Alpha Centauri, and those were just a small icon, really), I do think that much of the vocal love for the cube was an affectation, just like some of the "Still Alive" obsession. I think the game was worth most of the hype, but some nerds (Aja, note that I'm not including you in this category) have an extremely annoying way of obsessing over these memes and thinking that they're being clever.

I'm sure they intended it to be a satirical joke, rather than an actual relationship. I've got more attached to useful guns in FPSes than I did to the companion cube.

Especially since you use the damn thing for ten minutes.

This. It's a game mechanic that they turned into a joke, you retards. Don't blame Valve because an internet of nerds ruined said joke, it's what they do (see also Portal's end song).
Also: dethtoll, your rant is misguided, self-important, and ultimately destructive to the vitality of the hobby you claim such ownership over.
