"The Future of Shooters is RPGs" says... CliffyB - by van HellSing

for me games are about escapismn, visiting/exploring different worlds, doing things I can't do with my puny human body. don't care how they accomplish that. rpg, fps, platformer, hybrid, I don't care.
but calling bioshock an rpg made me stop reading the article. if he wants to throw in random and basic RPG stuff in his games, yeah, go ahead, it's not like this hasn't been done for the last years.......certainly the future.....:weird:
THE FUTURE IS NOW !!!! (which has been here since yesterday)

But I know what you mean. Personally the first 1/3 was the only really good part and even it was on a rollercoaster decline after the spectacular opening which quickly gave way to "why would I .... uhhh".
hahahahahahahahahahah
no.
The game hurls straight down the dumper after the scene with Ryan (although to be fair by that point I was starting to tire of the gameplay), so I meant the last 1/3.
One thing I discovered while discussing Bioshock with both you and Faf in NYC is System Shock nuttery doesn't just stop at the borders of Bioshock Gen, you fuckers really are insane :D

Well I thoroughly enjoyed Bioshock, even after A. Ryan (not as much, but still enjoyed it, Fontaine had nothing on Ryan, but he was an ok villian).
Now, the ending (both of'em).....yeesh...
Can't wait for BS 2 :)

Much as I despise BS I will concede that it brought a Shock-esk experience to the masses. I don't hate it for what it was but for what it pretended to be and what it could have been.
I think we'll see more and more of this type of thing as people are prepared to accept some RPGing element to FPSs and, as Cliffy says, its not enough to just be a straight shooter anymore.

I can totally get the "game goes downhill after Ryan" sequence because in terms of gameplay it totally does. Storyline-wise, not so much- I did want to find out what happened next- but goddamn if I don't fucking hate Apollo Square. I hated it then and I hate it now- though I liked Olympus Heights a little more this time. Apollo Square is bullshit. The splicers are everywhere, there's a non-stop stream of them, it reminds me of Return to the UNN before it was patched. Absolutely the most unbalanced part of the game.

The way I see it - Bioshock always had much riding on its shoulders, and because of this it was analysed to death. So in way, it's like Jesus*
It's not a bad game, in fact, it's one of the games to hold my attention longest in recent times. Hell, I wanted to finish it. I still can't drag myself back to Fallout 3.
Alas, with an army of frothing fanatics clutching at the memory of favourite games past, the tsunami of hatred we currently have was quickly up to speed and it didn't stand a chance of being forgiven any shortcomings.
I enjoyed the story, the atmosphere and the oh-so sexy art deco. And fuck me if Sander Cohen didn't creep me out in the most delicious way. Although I also tired of the constant splicer advance and general shootiness towards the end, my money is down for part 2 and you bet I'm looking forwards to it.
Anyone who likes Bioshock doesn't know any better? Get out your own arse please, Johnny. That's better, isn't it? Jolly Good.
Thing is though, Cliff; I love Gears 2 just as it is. I don't want RPG elements in Gears. I love the small squad based cover mechanics of the online play, where it's me, my lancer, the troubles of the day and any scum who wants some.
Now. Who wants some?
*ahaha!

I wasn't trying to imply you and I were on the same page w.r.t. BS, put that down to a missed carriage return. But still, you said it yourself: the last 2/3 stunk! :D

Like fashion, it seems the future of the shooter is the past rehashed with better advertising. But we can take it because we are young. Heartache to heartache we stand. No promises, no demands.

Damn it, that's going to be in my head all night, now.
