Good guess there. NMA stands for the Fallout fansite No Mutants Allowed, specifically the forums, which are home to some of the most irrational, hateful people on the internet. They hate any Fallout game that isn't FO1 and 2, and for some not even the 2nd game is good enough.
These are the people who accuse anyone who genuinely enjoyed Fallout 3 of being shills for Bethesda and actually got into a 4-page argument over what a FO1 dev meant when he said he liked Fallout 3. I hope it broke their diseased little hearts.

To understand what Cliffy means, you have to understand Cliffy. He's not particularly smart. (I think his success is mostly because he happened to be at the right time at the right place). Maybe his success is because he's just as dumb and empty-headed as most of his potential audience (the average kid gamers).
I think Cliffy didn't mean "RPG" when he described BioShock. I think he played some BioShock, and noticed that the game was in fact a bit more complex than the old Unreal ! And he thought to himself "no gamer is gonna play this, it's too complex !" But when it did sell, he probably realized that there is a market for games that on the one hand look as good as a modern FPS game, but on the other hand have a lot more and a lot more complex game elements.
Remember John Carmack ? He's a smart guy. But he stated that a good game should not have more than 6 buttons to push. Ever. 4 Directional buttons, a fire button, and maybe one more. He seriously believed that the simpler a game was, the better it was. I never understood that.
I've been playing mostly MMOs over the last few years. Even though MMOs aren't that complex really, still developers (like Blizzard, but also others) are continously busy trying to simplify their games more and more. Less and less differences between different classes. Simplified stat systems. Portals everywhere which remove the need to travel. Flying mounts so you can circumvent most of the game and go straight for your goal. Pointers on maps where the monsters are you need to kill. Arrows on screen to direct you where to kill a monster. Sparkles on stuff you need to search for, from miles away. Etc, etc.
Game studios think that by making games for the lowest common denominator they can maxizime their profits. But in the end everyone will try to make the same shitty simple dumb game. Not fun.
Maybe some people are slowly starting to realize that the gaming market is so huge, that you might actually be able to make a game that requires an I.Q. over 90, and still be able to sell it to millions. Maybe Cliffy realized that when he saw BioShock. Or Fallout 3.
Now BioShock or Fallout 3 aren't particularly complex games. But apparently they are already a lot more complex (and thus "RPGish") than what modern game developers are used to.
Maybe there is hope for the future.

Yeah, a lot of the classic developers now remind me of that TV Executive robot from Futurama whose sole purpose is to underestimate middle America.

If you hate WoW and its ilk so much, then why do you keep playing them? :weird:
