If you hate WoW and its ilk so much, then why do you keep playing them? :weird:
Protip- the majority of WoW players are masochists. Explains a lot, doesn't it?

Ain't nothing more funny than mad dorks with a stick up their asses. And over what? Casual games? Like Zuma? You all can go to hell. I like Zuma.
Also, if I remember correctly, everything kinda sucked back in the day, as well. Hell, I used to have a subscription to Gamefan magazine back in the day (qualifying me as one of the dorks I made fun of above), and most of any given issue was about how horrible the industry was because of the proliferation of FMV games and the lack of JRPGs.
Things haven't changed much.

Any time 'gamers' disparage games like that I think back to Llamatron, Smash TV, Pong and Asteroids and laught bitter tears.

The phrase "casual game" irks me to no end, and the people who throw it around with derision irk me even moreso. Just a bunch of insecure Youtubers craving attention, acting like games are fine cuisine, and they're epicureans bitching about having to eat a Big Mac. To me, a game doesn't have to be a 50 hour long RPG with a deep story and multiple endings for me to enjoy it. The only requirement I have is that whatever game I'm playing is fun and interesting. Sometimes, casual games fill that role better than the latest greatest AAA genre title.

Oh you're so non-noncomformist.

YES.
I can't stand this mentality of OH MAH GOSH THINGS ARE GOING BACKWARDS. People! Things have always been terrible!

I'd like to declare a moratorium on the term "hardcore gamer"- anybody who enjoys games on a competitive level (lots of people) or a literary/film-analogue level (me and I suspect most of TTLG) is merely a gamer.
Everybody else who only plays Guitar Hero and multiplayer Halo and thinks Portal is the be-all end-all of video gaming is a filthy dirty heathen casual gamer and is the cancer that is killing video games. This is entirely irrespective of whether you play on console or PC or both- it's got nothing to do with the platform and everything to do with the crap that developers are pooping out to appeal to people who still think video games are mere toys.
I have no beef with games like Guitar Hero in and of themselves- I know how it feels to come home dead tired and want to play something for half an hour to relax and turn off your brain for a bit- not having to overthink shit. Most of us want something like that every so often. There's nothing wrong if you don't have the time or inclination to play something indepth like Thief and just wanna jam on Rock Band or whatever, but that doesn't mean that the rest of us who actually view the medium as an excellent outlet for creative expression (like film or books) should have to watch the industry dry up because casuals gotta have their silly party games and bullshit $60+pulse=autowin interactive movies that require a console to watch.
Arguing that games back in the old days were just as simple as party games now is not only irrelevant, it's moot in the face of simply comparing the sort of people who played Tetris to the people who played motherfucking Zork.
Simply put there's no reason not to have casual games, but don't let the Starbucks-chugging, Coldplay-loving, "We only read prose by Irvine Welsh" PUDCHUGGERS who only bought a Wii 'cuz it was the next big thing dictate to those of us who have kept the industry alive for so long what sort of games we should play.
