@DarkElf_Mairead
You can simply do this:
save your game, restart the level, head to the hotel, overhear the conv. and finaly reload your saved game.

Thanks DarkElf & Oneof4, that solved the problem. I would have never thought of leaning forward.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I scimmed through some pages without finding reference to my question:
The "long" pathway to eventually meet up with Christine has early on down the hallway a force field preventing access to a room with 2 coffins and some loot. You get hurt if you try to go through it.
How do you turn off that force field?
While I'm at it, I have no more fire arrows and one of the secrets
the art painting on the wall
seems to require a fire arrow. Is there any other way to get at the loot
in behind the painting
?

@Clock
Search the statues in christines lair for a switch and visit the place where it gets you (no it's not that force field area). But it will get you closer to it.
About the painting: you can try to throw a flare, since it also has got a fire stim, don't know if that works here though.

hmmm, I didn't find anything in that small room where the sword was located, which is where the button on the statue in the lair led me to.
Do I have to kill that ghost hanging around down there to trigger off the force field?
Where would I find a flare? There are none in my inventory, and I never used any.

This is really strange....I found how to get through that force field:
Only by happenstance I noticed something on the floor along the "long" hallway and picked up what was described as Sir Fredrick's Switch. It disengaged the force field allowing me to enter the room. The switch was not at the room entrance but further along toward the room with the large nugget and the crashing ceiling. I don't think this item was supposed to be here, but that's where it ended up.
I still need a flare in order to try to access the loot
behind the painting
And how can you possibly get to the loot at
the top of the painting in the main entranceway???

Behind room number 2 there is a room to the right, locked but a screwdriver will open it, now in the room between the wall and the machine with the numbers, at the back is a lever, crouch and frob. You should get a found secret message.
I'm frob the lever. Mission - the end :wot:

You must be playing on deathwish then. There is exactly one flare in this mission and it's located in a toolbox behind some boxes and below the stairs.
About that switch: this thing should have been in that area I sent you to. Must be a bug.
About the loot on the painting: there is a rope arrow in a toolbox in a hidden section of the library. You can also reach this place by using the theater room.
@clearing
There is a bug on deathwish which lets you fail in this mission if you kill anyone. Although there is no objective "don't kill anyone" shown at first, it is already active right from the start of the mission. When you kill someone, you can see a crossed out objective (means you failed this one). Unfortunately this failure won't stop the game from proceeding in the mission -- until you do something that alters the state of the other objectives or discover any secrets (like that switch). Then the mission immediately fails. You will have to reload or even restart the mission.

Yes, I'm playing on Deathwish. I think I know where you are talking about regards the toolbox. I'll check it out.
The rope arrow I have doesn't extend far enough down for me to jump up and grab on. I'll have to look into the "other" way you speak of. They seem to me to be spatially apart though.
the "portable switch" is probably a bug, though I've never seen such a switch before in Thief missions. Perhaps it was carried by the ghost guard, who i whacked in the vicinity of the found switch. He dropped it and I missed it at the time.

The flare worked !! Though you have to throw it very specifically. Thanks SinisterShadow
