"Whoa" moments. - by JumpinBlackjackFlash

The moment when Thief first "snuck into my affections" as it were was, somewhat predicatably maybe, Lord Baffords. When I first loaded up the game I wasn't entirely what the game was all about. Find my way into a kind of medieval building, okay, sure. It was all good fun for a while, but I think it was near the end that I started to realise what a great idea this was. At the part where you step down a few wooden stairs and then the warbly flute and mournful horn music sounds, you know that you're getting a lot closer to your goal and you're really not supposed to be there. :sly: In all honesty I've never experienced a more atmospheric experience in gaming. That really got me hooked into the Thief world. It was also the first level where I managed to get up onto a roof in a level.
Bonehoard really freaked me out at the time (too bad you can't replicate the experience) The sense of loneliness was creepy and the sheer size made getting lost another thing to worry about. And the first time you hear The Horn Of Quintus, almost beyond hearing in the windy tunnel was another early moment that I loved.
Assassin- "Oh that looks nice *ching*..oh hang on I think I'll just take a look at this *ching* yes very nice craftsmanship there *ching* oh is that the time, got to go now, buy"
Mage Towers- a lot of people don't like this one, but I happened to enjoy the fantasy cliched air, earth , fire water levels, and the music was great too.
Return To The Cathedral. By now it's become kind of a "ooooh it was so scary!" cliche, but...it was scary to be honest. Now the horror of it is somewhat diminshed through repeat plays and over analysis. But it was a level I both loved and hated for it's fear factor.
The cutscene where Constantine turns in The Trickster. Maybe I was naive, but I honestly wasn't expecting this.
Thief 2 - I don't exactly remember offhand too many wow moments, except for the first time those large cannon robots stomp towards you. Hiding in the shadows when one stomps past just a few feet away was pretty scary. I do remember noting that that the level design was a lot tighter (as they said it would be) I remember it being probably more "fun" than Thief Gold, but I didn't find the atmosphere as foreboding or sinister overall. I do remember the somewhat hunourous *bonk* *bonk* *bonk* when trying to blackjack the diver on the submarine.
Never played Thief 3 yet, as I still have a vintage 2001 era PC. :nono:

pretty much the first time I played thief, and it hit me that this was totally unlike any game I'd ever played, I didn't have to go ramboing round killing everything in sight in fact if I did I'd probably get killed off fairly quickly but instead I had to take my time, hide, plan, look at my surroundings and pay attention to the sounds and conversations around me, it drew me in and immersed me in the character in a way that I'd never experienced before or again in any other game, it was me in there, silently cursing the guard from the shadow, hoping with sweaty palms that the guard would give up his search for me, shrinking into the shadows when he got near, sagging with relief when he went away
that "whoa!" moment of realisation was what hooked me on thief and has kept me hooked to the present day
