Maybe it speaks with a language that Karras thinks is superior to English. Like a form of clockwork machine code.

Because he's obviously speech impaired,hehe.:laff:
Karras spent too much money on the body and not enough on the brain.
That Golden Boy always freaked me out, I thought that it would give me away to the guards and he looks pretty creepy too.
Yup, that's the point i guess. He was only added to give the player an unexpected shock and to make you think "Karras really is a bit nutty."

My thought was always that he is a prototype for the next generation of the Children of Karras. Notice he has no exposed boiler, stands up-right, and is invincible when it comes to the current level of weaponry. Would also explain the lack of speech. It's not done yet.
The idea that he is the design for the occupant of the new world also makes sense to me. As Karras saw things it was his destiny to bring about the Builder's perfect world. So the occupants would need to be variants on the Builder's design, but, as Karras saw it, perfected.
Another thought is he was going to be something more important, but was editted out. the designer not wishing all his work to be wasted just tucked him in as a cute harmless Easter Egg of sorts. Then it sparked great debate in the fan community. Who went looking for deeper meaning when it turned out to be the remnants of a deleted scene.
Reminds me of the question, "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?" The forum may never know...

I think Po is on the right track. A Golden Boy is a pretty straight-forward symbol of uninhibited, highly stylized, decadence and sexuality ... especially for a person who has real psychological issues going back to childhood, suddenly coming into great wealth (you can find lots of examples in history). Imprisoning a young boy in angelic Grecian golden armor and stunting his mind... There's pretty much just one job for a pitiable creature like that. He was Karras's gimp-child satyr.

And he doesn't back-talk.:eww:

For me, the real mystery is why the Golden Boy has the language skills of R2D2.
Don
Bearing in mind that the other Children of Karras don't actually speak at all, they only play pre-programmed messages of Karras' recordings, so technically, the Golden Boy speaks better than they do.

It kind of shocked me. I know it may sound strange, but we see all of these other slaves of Karras, and we assume they were adults? When we see the golden boy, is he supposed to represent a child that Karras destroyed?
I always thought he was there to show how much of a monster Karras was.

As a dramatic device, yeah, I agree, that's exactly the role it's playing. When you see this kind of kid in movies, it's almost always making a negative statement about the perpetrator. It's showing that Karras has a messed up fetish ... that it's not just about the utility of turning pagans and vagrants into zombies, or the religious purity of it ... but he actually gets off on this stuff ... in a mild, genteel way that makes it all the more chilling.
I always like to look at elements in the games and wonder what dramatic role they are playing to the bigger story. And the golden boy intrigued me, because it was unexpected, but once you followed him around it started to click how quietly disturbing it seemed, and what it said about Karras.

Plus there's the whole "Father Karras" and "Child of Karras" connection to the cherub.

It positively spooked me the first time I encountered it in Angelwatch.
But I always found the other servants much more creepier; when you hear them sobbing beneath their masks. That just freaked me out.
Is there, or has somebody come up with, an in-game explanation of why and how the Golden Boy just pops up when you open the safe and read the scriptures?
