Anime again... - by scumble

I got tired of watching Digimon with the children and ended up watching Gurren Lagann with them. This got me looking for some new series to watch and wondering what else there was that might be suitable for children.
So far I've picked up a Ghost in the Shell "stand alone complex" and I'm not sure what "2nd GIG" means. This is a bit too political and violent for children, although interesting. I also have Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood but that turned out to be a bit scary for the children too, despite the fun magic/alchemy bits.
I think the kids may like mecha series but apart from Gundam I'm not too familiar with anything else. English dubbing is probably a must as they aren't going to cope with subtitles. There are so many Anime series it's a little difficult to know where to start...
I could do with some torrent site suggestions as well, as I've forgotten all the ones I found in 2009.
So far I've watched Gurren Lagann, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Gundam 00, and another series I've forgotten the name of. I found my old thread (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128179) here so it's actually CANAAN. I can probably refer to that again as apparently someone suggested the Ghost in the Shell series then. I've got more bandwidth these days so acquiring the files isn't so tedious.
Perhaps stick to anything from the last 4 years or so that may have come along...

I haven't watched any anime in years...so funny you should bring this up. I'm told that most of the new releases don't measure up to the standards that some of the original hit series set but I'd be open to hearing anyone who wants to convince me of an exception.
Ghost in the Shell I remember because it was playing on American television. It struck me as having a mood, writing, and themes that were far more mature than your average anime....and being interesting for a lot of the same reasons that Deus Ex was interesting.
Have you ever seen Code Geass? It's far more trope-y than Ghost in the Shell was but Zero's deceptions and gambits make for good television.

Doraemon, One Piece, and DBZ are better for kids. I mean they're classics they need to watch if they're going to be anime literate. Naruto has been all the rage sort of more recently.
Well I'm in Tokyo right now and went to the manga shop just yesterday, and the sheer volume of anime lined up on the shelves that I hadn't heard of was overwhelming to me too.

Last good anime I watched was Samurai X (also known as Rurouni Kenshin). Has several OVA's to go with it as well. Really good show.

Means it's the second series. The stories in both series are self contained, but the second does have a couple of references to the first, so it's best to start there. There's only 2 series but there's also a film that takes place a few years later called Solid State Society.

As I recall, I very much enjoyed a 3 x 1 hour mini series called (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyber_City_Oedo_808) OEDO: Cyber City 808 when I was a teenager. I can't speak for how good it is, bearing in mind that many's the time I've returned to something I loved when I was younger only to find it was bad and I just had unrefined taste.

Seems like you can drop into it easily enough. I'd like to know more about all the weird prosthetics but that might be in the first series. Enjoying the music - downloaded a collection (

you can just for to the lovemyanime site and watch them online, no need to torrent.
One Piece is a long, epic adventure, fit mostly for the younger folks, full of maximalism and hype energy.
Rurouni Kenshin I watched the first 7 episodes or so and looked like a very 90s children cartoon. Pretty cool, really.
Gintama is a good and comedic anime full of humor that is both for children and adults.
Naruto is quite a good thing too. Perhaps one of the best animes for a kid to watch.
Can't think of anything else right now, I suppose you wouldn't like your kid to watch Death Note.
Anime movies... Sword of the Stranger might be something to take a look at. Arsene Lupin III I think had some really fun movie that I watched ages ago. And there was this kids anime movie that really let imagination take over, it was very adventurous and fun; I think it was called Laputa - Castle in the Sky. It's quite old, really. (One Piece also had a great arc when they went to the sky island. Sky islands are the best.)

Depends what quality you're after or if you want something ripped from TV broadcasts. Streaming is good for sampling stuff you aren't sure about of course.
Keep listening to "(
http://youtu.be/oq-9EgC6kQA) Rise" from the GITS:SAC soundtrack. Unfortunate mnemonic for the English...

I watched Gurren Lagann on Netflix and thought it was very funny. After that I watched Kill la Kill, not expecting much, but it was even funnier and I'm looking forward to the next season.
I don't think either are particularly suitable for kids, though I guess it all depends.
