Same in the UK since someone had the bright idea of privatising the rail system. I think the problem is that there is only one track, and you can't really have competition in the same way as with planes. So you get defacto local monopolies and price fixing combined with no real reason to offer a decent service. German rail is still state run and works very well. I think it kind of has to be.

Yeah the UK rail system took a massive dick when it was privatised. Standard journey for me is Southampton to Cambridge (about 200 miles) which costs £85 return and I have to sit on the floor between carriages if it is busy. The fuck?
Scumble - in the UK & US the income inequality vs cost of living widen massively. The US has the worst Gini coefficient of any industrialised nation (53 or so) and the UK is not far behind (42 ish). Cost of living goes up much faster than average salary and only those in the top 10% earning bracket are ahead of the curve, so rich get richer, poor get poorer - literally. But that's another discussion.

I think I lost brain function just skim-reading some of the comments in that thread. I had to stop before I flipped my desk over and hurled my monitor over the balcony into the concourse.

So we bundled past the previous minimum for ice extent a couple of days ago. No sign of slowing down and still potentially a couple of weeks or so of melt season left. And about a million square kilometres of sea ice (

Starting to feel like watching the end of the world :(
