Another shooting in the USA. Remind me about the reason for having guns again. - by SubJeff

Did I say guns? No. I said weapons -- intentionally a more general term, since you yourself said "hand-to-hand" in an earlier post. And anyway the fact that you had weapons all over the house "just in case" spoke a lot towards what you/your family felt was necessary, so don't split hairs with me.

so it's all cultural and i'm racist because I don't understand the need to own little hand-held weapons that can put a tube of metal straight through your head at 600 meters per second or whatever. Whatever. Guns are gay and getting butthurt about not being able to have one any more (for reasons that don't make any fucking sense) is double gay.

i'll double-gay you

I support gun rights and I also don't feel the need to own any.

Hey Dethtoll:
I went to a gun show today and it was awesome.

If I lived in any country with a relatively high gun prevalence yes I'd have multiple weapons, and they'd be in different places about the house. As well as melee weapons.
Ironically, if you did this you'd be in violation of gun storage laws in quite a few states.

I'm ok with pretty strict gun control laws in principle, but I liked the idea of gun clubs or firing ranges that could still be authorized to hold your guns, and you could go to them for shooting practice or whatever. Then you could focus a lot of the security and safety measures there, and people still have a legal outlet to connect with guns...
I mean, I think there's a lot of cultural and historical resonance with them. I don't think I'd like if people were just never allowed to have some way to hold one in their hands, see how they work, and have that connection if they wanted to. Just have it channeled to a secure environment you can manage things better than just anywhere.

I actually only have one, a 1911. And I don't feel the need to keep melee weapons about, as I live in a two bedroom, 2nd story apartment with my roomate and the front door is set up like a hotel door (with a bolt lock and a chain). Anyone coming in will have to make a significant amount of noise doing it, which would give me ample to slap in a magazine and have it at the ready

I own 5 guns. No, I can't carry them all at the same time, but they all serve a different purpose. Namely, the different things I shoot with them.
I also don't live in a big city with an inner city that has gang and drug problems.
Somebody mentioned something about obsolete or worthless pastimes involving firearms and somewhere in that list there was "hunting".
Where I come from a firearm is a tool as useful and benign as a shovel or a rake. You shoot coyotes or lose dogs that try to eat your livestock, you shoot gophers so that you can fill in their holes to stop them from breaking your horses legs, and you shoot the appropriate fauna in the designated hunting areas with a valid license so that you have ample food for the winter and do your part to cut back on society's need for feedlots and mass produced meat.
The only difference between a shovel, a rake, and a gun is the training and licensing involved to get one. As far as personal protection goes. It also serves no different purpose than having a baseball bat handy in case somebody tries to screw with your home and your family.
