Nuth - I'm very interested in books. Preferably something I can get as an eBook though as I do most of my reading from a tablet these days.
Anything you can recommend? Throw some titles at me and I'll see if they exist in e form.

Best chess teaching book ever: (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mein_System) "Mein System" by Nimzowitch.
It might seem a bit boring. Because it's old. But there is humor in there. And the stuff Nimzowitch teaches is very valuable for understanding chess.

@SubjEff, I'm moving to Japan over the next few days so will take this back up when I get settled there.
@faetal, the Exeter Chess Club site has a lot of online tutorials that are good. As for contemporary books, I like John Watson's books, his Mastering the Chess Openings, Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy (it's post-Nimzowitch strategy, so it wouldn't hurt to read his book before it too), and Chess Strategy in Action. Lasker also wrote a classic strategy book that should be in the public domain. Then there's Ludek Pachman, Modern Chess Tactics. Dvoretsky/Yusupov, Positional Play.
But I would google "best chess books" and look through the forum threads and lists that pop up to read about the best according to people that really know these things.

I'm not sure playing chess is the best way to waste my life. :)
Before I played computergames, I wasted quite a bit of time on chess.
I haven't played a game in 15 years. But I do look at games sometimes. ((
www.chessgames.com) Chessgames.com is a fine site for that).
And for me, the real mystery and romantics of chess has slowly disappeared since the rise of computers.
And then there's the time difference.
But ok, I created an account.
My name on chess.com is "Gryzemuis". (I haven't used LittleFlower as a nick since my UT99 days 12 years ago).
(And FYI, "Gryze Muis" is dutch for "Grey Mouse"). Call me Gryz for short. (Gryz was taken on chess.com of course).
If anyone here wants a game, challenge me.
Are we only playing correspondence games ? Or Live too ? Long games, or just blitz ?

If it's any reassurance, none of us except Nuth I think have played in 15 years and we're all working out the kinks. But after you play a few games it'll start coming back to you... All these guys had their ability ramp up after just a few games, I could notice it.

Yeah, is been a while for us all I think. Certainly had been for me. I'm really glad faetal started this.

So, as a guy who last played Chess like 10 years ago, and even then barely so, I'd probably get slaughtered by the lot of you, right? :o

Nope - trust me, you'll be fine.
