(Crossposted ffrom the TDM forums since I figured there'd be more response here)
I have suddenly realised I am missing blasting stuff into bloody chunks with a backpack's worth of futuristic weaponry, and the most recent games from that category I actually own are Half-Life 2 and FEAR. So, could you recommend me some nice, classical, single player FPS games based on my preferences below?
Quote:
Games I liked:Original Unreal: large levels, fantasy-meets-technology aspect, music from the best of the modscene
Unreal Tournament and various mods (Operation Na Pali!)
Half-Life / Half-Life 2: good balance of environments and gameplay gimmicks. HL2 started to become a bit overbearing, though, if that makes sense.
Painkiller: a modern Quake-like game!
Max Payne: bullet time, badass clichés and villains (okay, not really an FPS)
Games I have not been impressed with:FEAR: generic, repetitive, horror story trite and uninteresting
HALO: played the start at a friend, entirely forgettable
Max Payne 2: embarrasing love story, pity porn, too hard
Doom 3: had its moments, but monster closet design was a bit of a letdown - plus it didn't feel properly doomy without hordes of enemies rushing you
Games I am not looking for: Bulletstorm, anything involving WW2 (incl. modern Wolfenstein-clones), Far Cry (liked it, but not interested in the sequel), Quake 4, Serious Sam
My system specs are:
Quote:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.00 GHz
6.00 GB RAM
Windows 7
ATI Radeon HD 4800
If there are good full Doom3 campaigns out there that are better than the original game (and I mean significantly better), I may be interested in them as well.

If you liked Half-Life/2, get the expansions and episodes.
It's too bad you didn't like FEAR, though- I love that game and its sequel, though I recognize it's very much a love-or-hate situation.
Max Payne 2 being too hard? What? It's easier than the original. Try sucking less.
Why haven't you played Stalker yet?

Duke Nukem 3D and the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series, you Philistine.

Renzatic: I specifically wrote I am not interested in Serious Sam! :laff:
dethtoll: I own Stalker, but it's not the kind of game I'm currently looking for. I'd like something I can play for a few hours when I am home from work, not something so fiddly.
The HL2 episodes may be interesting. How do they compare to the main game? I heard they were really short.
Also, someone on the TDM forums recommended Necrovision, which is by the same guys who did Painkiller, and I liked Painkiller. How about that?
Dresden: Those are too old. Besides, I've already played through Duke 3d several times, and hundreds of fanmade levels. They were great, but I'd like something new.

Oh yeah, at the very end. Like I'm supposed to see that.
edit: What about Blood? If you're not too burnt out on Duke3D, it's a great title to consider.

I've probably recommended this game ten times by now, but check out SiN. It is one of my all-time favorites. The reasons are:
*lengthy SP game
*very interactive environment: you can use command-lines on computers in the game world!
*every level is drastically different from the last
*lots of good dialogue, some of which made me laugh
*ABO "action based outcomes" that will affect future levels and/or your path through the said levels based on the things you do
*an awesome training level (probably the best in any game ever)
*tuns of weapons, including a great sniper rifle
*not a world war II game!
I'm surprised at your system specs though. It seems like that CPU is really holding you back. My old box has a 3200+ with a geforce 7600 GS and 1.2 gigs of RAM, but of course that machine will still run through SiN at hundreds of FPS.

Don't forget:
* Tedious pre-Half-Life key hunt level design
