At some point during the next year, I may be required to spend 2 or more weeks doing some work at Yale school of medicine, so I was wondering if I could get some advice on what to do with my spare time and which places to see / avoid etc...

It's only around an hour & a half train ride into New York City, so it almost goes without saying you could visit the big city for day trips.

I've been to New York. It's an impressive city yet artificial at the same time in my opinion, concrete jungle that it is. I wouldn't go specifically there again, that's for sure.
