Any popular Team Fortress games/mods available besides valve-infected ones? - by lost_soul

I used to play Quake MegaTF and I loved it. I also used to play TFC for half-life and that was great as well. I am currently more than a little pissed because when I try to play TFC online, I am told that the Steam servers are too busy right now.
Therefore, I want a Team Fortress mod that is popular and doesn't require a piece of unnecessary crap like Steam. I know there was Q3F, but I think it is dead now. There is also a project called Open Fortress, but that is little more than a forum post with some screen shots at this point. It likely won't be finished for a wile unfortunately.
There is also Enemy Territory:Fortress, but there doesn't seem to be anyone playing that either. It seems like with the availability of all 3 Quake engines as GPL, someone should have made a TF mod free from this corporate bullshit by now... A game that doesn't artificially require some completely unnecessary server and will always work
I guess I'll go play Tremulous or Urban Terror. They're free and they always work.

Looks cool, but I think you misunderstood me. :)
I'm looking for a TF style game where I can just connect to a public server run by *anyone* without the involvement of the publisher. This was how it was back in the '90s and online gaming was much better then. If Joe's public server wasn't responding, you could just play somewhere else. These days, if the publisher's authentication system doesn't work, you aint playing at all.
I forgot to mention Unreal Fortress. That's a pretty cool UT mod and it has bot support too. I'm not sure if there's an online community for this one... I should check it out.

Its been awhile since I've played (
http://ezquake.sourceforge.net/) EZQuake which needs the original Quake pak files to play offline/online. There are servers which run custom TF style gameplay, once you join it will download the necessary files to play. How many players still play the TF version I'm not sure. Its quick to setup and go, as long as you have the necessary files.
There are other QuakeWorld variations as well, check the toolbar above the EZQuake page.
There's (
http://www.ganggarrison.com/) this also. ;)

Fortress Forever is a shrine to everything that sucked about TFC anyway. Also "valve-infected" hahahaha fuck off

I really loved the netcode in TFC after half-life 1.1.1.4 patch (I think that was the one). It had lag compensation, and the best implementation of it I've seen to date. The voice chat was also good to communicate with teammates.

lost_soul, are you still never planning to serve in your country's armed forces because of DMCA?
On a related note:- I wouldn't mind playing a TF2 mod, that "restored" the original game to a state before it became an imbalanced, non-casual player friendly, piece of shit after all of the class updates.

yep.
Did you ever play NeoTF? That was a cool update because it added tuns of new abilities to the classes. My favorite was the engineer's multigun, which had to be upgraded before it could function. A spy could hang out near the enemy engineer and "capture" his multigun, turning it against his own team. I always laughed like a maniac when I made a player run away from his own creations by capturing them.

...how does the Digital Millennium Copyright Act cause you to join the military?
Clearly we're having a case of conflicting acronymns.

Nonono, he refuses to join the military because of the DMCA. Which is the stupidest fucking thing I ever heard- wouldn't you not join the military because you were, oh I dunno, anti war?
