The premise and pre-release media for this had me very interested but the brutality of the reviews pretty much killed any chance I would get the game. What I'm curious about is whether the subsequent patches, expansions, and downloadable content have improved it enough that it would actually be worth buying now. Thoughts?

I think you shouldn't trust the reviews.

I've read that it's like the Turkish Star Wars equivalent of Oblivion, so it's likely one of those so-bad-it's-good types of experiences.
(

From the looks of it, the developers have tried hard to significantly improve the game through numerous patches and free mini-expansions. As you've already mentioned.

Right now, with all the patches applied, Two Worlds is more than a decent game. I'd risk saying that it looks a bit better than Oblivion, and it plays really well. What it is, however, is not a very ambitious CRPG, but a hack&slash with lots of dialogue&plot, and as such, it's one of the best around. Think Divine Divinity. The dialogue is not as cheesy as people would want you to believe, and the plot is decent enough to keep you going. The gameworld is quite beatiful and varied, and the fighting system is really entertaining. Plus, like in any decent h&s, there's lots of equipment to collect and play with. Why there's so much negative hype about it - I have no idea (except the really horrific cover art :), and the extremely boring dungeons - but there's not too much time you actually HAVE to spend in them ). I suppose it's the question of the advertising budget thanks to which not-that-great games like Oblivion or Bioshock become instant classics, and less known European stuff, like Two Worlds or Gothic, is considered crap.

I tried the demo of it and while my memory is fuzzy on the details I do remember that it I couldn't bear playing it for more than a few minutes before exiting and uninstalling it.

Never played it actually(Though I plan to), it was just a general advice thing.

I've tried it out for a couple of days and it went ok but after a while it got really dull, The bad dialogue, flat characters and other factors gave me no motivation so I ended up uninstalling it. Most people describe it as the poor man's Oblivion and I can see what they mean. While the concept may have sounded cool the end result was mediocre at best. I'll take Morrowind and Oblivion over this any day.
