Even if he could do it legally, I'm sure none of us could afford him.
Random_Taffer on 27/1/2015 at 22:50
Maybe he could voice Garrett's older brother Barrett.
Renault on 27/1/2015 at 23:06
I wonder if he would charge more or less depending on if he was doing Garrett or Benny. We've heard several people do Garrett, but no one dares to try a Benny impersonation.

Stephen Russell is part of the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater group in Massachusetts (I am not a stalker).
Like most theatre groups, they are always looking for donations to supplement their income.
What say we make him an offer he can't refuse, patronage for dialogue. Heh heh heh.:ebil:

Seriously: I can contact my brother, there are no problem ^^ But the risk is just to get some mistakes about pronounciation... and get some comments from a famous Random_taffer about a Basso who is very "Fury-ous"... Isn't it? x)
I wouldn't mind simple mistakes at all. As long it fits my description of what voice I need ill take it :) I'll PM you more info on it and give you the details :cheeky:

His version of Garrett's voice is still subject to copyright. The fact that there's a 'nu' Garrett doesn't change that.
I doubt that there is a copyright on "Stephen Russell speaking with certain accent", so I see no reason why some random barks or comments should be a problem - as long as he doesn't say
I'm Groot Garrett.
has anyone ever actually tried asking him whether he could/would be willing to do this?

Isn't that like Clayton Moore (the original TV Lone Ranger) going to open shopping malls in the '60s/70s after he was fired from the show, and in 1979 he was sued to prevent him from exploiting the character. He lost, but won a counter suit (ref.(
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clayton_Moore#Lawsuit_over_public_appearances)). While it might be theoretically possible for the Garrett copyright holder to enjoin Stephen Russel from doing the voice, given what hasn't happened with New Dark, I would think it extremely unlikely at this point.

Yes, in the early 2000's someone here actual asked him and got a response. He politely declined saying he couldn't do Garrett for anyone due to contractual reasons and the fact that the character is the IP of Eidos (as R Soul mentioned above).
voodoo47 on 28/1/2015 at 10:00
it wouldn't be a bad idea to ask again - the contract might already be void after 15 years, and also asking him to do "Thief-style voice clips" rather than "Garrett" might be a good idea as well, as mentioned, he (and nobody else, for that matter) probably isn't allowed to do voice clips screaming "I'm Garrett, the master thief from the Thief ip that is currently owned by square" (especially when being paid for it), but as I've said, I find it hard to believe that he could be legally in trouble for recording a generic "this job is going to be a tough one" audio clip for some FM with a Garrettesque accent.
I'm no lawyer, and I know it's US, but no way in hell someone can own somebody else's way of talking.
Renault on 28/1/2015 at 21:02
I'm not saying we shouldn't try. However...
Look at it from his point of view. I'm assuming nobody is paying him, right? I mean sure, if he was playing some generic Thief in any other game, maybe even for The Dark Mod, it might be OK. But playing the protagonist, a thief, in a fan mod for the official game called Thief, owned by Eidos who at one point had you under contract saying you couldn't play Garrett for anyone else besides them, and then doing it all for free?
I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot blackjack if I was him.
