It's very clear that none of you actually know anything about chess. For you it's not much more than a game of tic-tac-toe. However, chess is a very complex and rich game. Like we always say in computer games "easy to learn, hard to master". That's what we like. Chess is even more like that. You can learn the rules in an hour. But you can spend 10+ years playing full time, and you will still not have mastered everything there is in chess.
You might think the game is shallow and boring. But unless you understand some basics of what you're doing, you can't really spend much time thinking about strategy. It would be like playing Thief without being able to read or understand English. It might be fun for a few hours, but in fact you have no clue what you're doing. You won't even see the beauty of the game. Let alone have a chance to learn to appreciate it.

. . . everything instantly kills everything . . .
Not true; Kings cannot be killed. :D
Of course, technically, nothing is killed, it is simply captured, but that's beside the point.
I like chess. Although everyone hates playing with me because I take a long time to analyze my moves. :p But it's fun.

It boils down to what Koki said so succinctly. Simply going through the motions of a game's mechanical rules in order to win isn't enough of a motivational goal. but if I can construct some kind of story around those barebones mechanics, it provides more of an incentive, and I can get really caught up in it.
I do this too. When I play the UT99 ladder for example, I imagine myself trying to win the competition in order to end the corruption that plagues the tournament, and when I play Serious Sam (I'm playing the Second Encounter right now) I try to invest emotionally in the paper thin story about defeating Mental before he grows too powerful and destroys the earth. Even though those games are mostly about the mechanics, it's more fun to have a reason for all the killing. The only games I play where the story doesn't matter to me are racing games.
Never liked Tetris, Pac-Man, Minesweeper, etc.

I like real chess more because you can spit the enemy in the eye.
Not to mention what you can do with the bishop.

Isn't it like checkers without all the fun...and a lot more pretension?

I don't think chess is shallow, but it's true I think it's boring. I'll give you that.
When I play chess I understand what I'm doing. I do think about the strategy. I do think about winning. But for some reason, chess is just boring for me. For me it's like mathematics, or spelling. I full well know what I'm doing, and yes, I want to do it right, but it's still boring for me. Tedious.
I've got nothing against liking chess or math', or those involved in spelling bees or whatever. It's just when someone says "You don't like it 'cos you're dumb" that's when I get annoyed – when people start thinking for me.

Two identical sides with identical forces, only six different units, move or attack only, tiny area, no terrain, everything instantly kills everything, no fog of war, no morale, no exhaustion, supplies, resource system...
Not to mention the horrible animations and sub-par voice acting.

Maybe it's the fact that you're sitting in front of an opponent and you get to hold your pieces that's part of the immersion?
Touching... knights in black... and getting close and personal with them... following orders... that... I...

And I heard they took like a HUNDRED YEARS to add online multiplayer. I mean seriously, that might have been cool before electricity but I have to say its a major sticking point comparing it to todays games.

Oh wow. You know, I think chess is pretty romantic if you think about it. Knights in shining armour fighting to the death for you...

It's very clear to me that your reading comprehension sucks.
