As far as old game music goes, I really love the music from Mega Man 2 on the NES, particularly Quickman and the Dr. Wiley stage. It sounds so cool coming out of the mono 8 KHz chip, even though the thing can probably only produce 4 tones simultaneously.

I prefer the old style realistic look too.
Most modern PC games look plastic.
Console games always have a more filmic look because of the crappy TV screen resolution.
EG - The GTA series looks fantastic on a console and TV Screen. It looks shit and plastic on a PC.
I'm glad that someone else has observed this! :thumb:
I also felt that GTA San Andreas looked much better on my PS2 than on my Computer screen. Even though the computer could go to a much higher screen resolution.
I always wanted to find out why this was so. I wasn't sure if it was just personal preference, or if there was something to it. You mentioned a "filmic" look that console games have, and I know what you mean.
There's just something about lower resolutions...I still don't think I fully understand this from a theoretical perspective.
