Anyone know about Steam altering/opt. games? - by gunsmoke

I got a pop-up today at Steam log-in. It notified me that Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich need to be converted to a new, more efficient file type. It wasn't the only game, and if I remember right there were a total of two others. I had someone hijack my Steam acct. ~ three years ago so I am overy-cautious with Steam.
Is this legit? Anyone else seen this recently (today). What is it? Why are Steam doing it anyway (if it is legit).
Thanks

I've had several games do that. It just means they've converted the game data to a format that works better with their new way of distributing data.

Yeah, it's legit. IIRC, it's intent is to make patching things more efficient, so we don't get the situation like we had with Witcher 2, where the first patch required downloading 8GB to change like 200MB.

What is an opt. game, and why do I care if Steam alters it?

Thank goodness for that. It's such a basic and obvious limitation I'm amazed it's taken them so long to get this sorted.

It also breaks some games atm, like arma 2 OA wont run through steam after the conversion.

Oh my giddy aunt… this is amazing.
And also, the fact that it’s amazing, is entirely pathetic.
