Anyone remember Requiem: Avenging Angel? Got a question... - by Rekrul

I just installed and played Requiem: Avenging Angel a couple days ago. I installed it, patched it to 1.2 and then to 1.3. I had a few crashes and a couple lockups, but mostly the game worked ok on my Win98SE system. (could be my system though)
After I finished the game I realized that I had never used the Time Warp power. I figured that I just overlooked it, so I loaded a save from near the end of the game to check it out. I discovered that I didn't have Time Warp. I figured that maybe you only get it for the final battle with Lucifer, but I didn't have it there either. I finished the game and never got Time Warp!
I was under the impression that the powers were given to you at preset points in the game regardless of what you do. Is there some task you need to complete to get Time Warp?
On the ship, there were two areas that I didn't see a point to and basically skipped. The first was a section where you can enter some ventilation tunnels. A short distance in, you get blown around and emerge in a large room with a couple of robots and no visible way out. After wandering around the room for a few minutes, I re-loaded a saved game and ignored the ventilation shafts.
The other area was in a tube-like room. You enter through a door in the left wall, turn left and there's a round door leading to another room with a metal walkway and a robot. On the right wall is a section that opens when you go up to it, then another tube-like room with a bot (or heavy soldier, I forget which) waiting for you. On the wall on the other side of that room is a door that leads to a room with a soldier and button. I pressed it, but didn't notice anything open up, so I just ignored it and went back to the first room.
I also never found a use for the Heal Others power. I tried using it on Judith, but of course it didn't work. I tried using it on others who appeared sick, but again there was no effect. I think I only ever used Flight (incredibly mis-named power!) once.
Other things I noticed; Resurrected soldiers like you but don't like rebels. In the level with the narrow curving outdoor walkways, I had three resurrected soldiers follwing me and when I came to a rebel soldier, they started shooting at him. A short time later, I resurrected a dead rebel soldier and he started shooting at me! Resurrected soldiers also don't like Insisted soldiers. I had a couple guys following me and I used Insist on one of those soldiers in the armor that looks like ED-209 so that it wouldn't blow me away and my guys started attacking it. Of course they blew themselves up by throwing grenades at a closed door!
I liked the earlier levels, but once I got on the ship, I had no idea which way to go. Half the time I felt I was just wandering aimlessly. I also didn't care for the boss battles that much. Only certain weapons/powers would affect each one and even though they flashed red to indicate a hit, I never really got the sense that I was actually making progress.
Anyway...
Anyone have any idea why I never got the Time Warp power? Or can anyone tell me at what point in the game I was supposed to receive it?

I don't remember having a time-warp power. Was too busy turning them to salt and boil their blood. Requiem was a fun game, pretty scary.

It's been few years since I played it so I don't remember precisely, but I think I was able to use the Time Warp ability since I was in some kind of cavelike area (rebel camp?)... I clearly remember I used it to slow down a beast of some kid, miniboss like a gargoyle or a lion... And I was able to use Time Warp from that point for the rest of the game and found it pretty useful, as well as good looking (slo-mo firefights were a big thing back when the game was released in 2001 and The Matrix was still impressing people.) Maybe you need to do some task right so you can get the ability as a reward, but I think it's unlikely.
Though I think the abilities are not the same in singleplayer and multiplayer (where you can choose which you want to have for angelic powers and diabolic powers.)
I liked to jump right in the middle of a group of soldiers, hit Time Warp, kill one or two, hit Resurrect or Possess and I had my personal bodyguards against the others. Other powers like Brimstone, Locusts and Blood Boil were cool as well. All powers look better while the Time Warp is in effect.
The bosses and big robots were a challenge on higher difficulties. Remember that the final boss is partially immune, but he's wulnerable to Lighting.
Nice and intense shooter fort it's day I guess, nevermind the stupid looking models and bad alignation of textures. It was very well optimized and ran good at max settings and in high resolution even on mediocre Pentiums. There was some obscure problem with installation, which has been solved by one of the early patches.
I don't have the game anymore, but I keep the ripped soundtrack and listen to it occassionaly when I'm in apocalyptic mood.

Are you referring to the second boss fight where you're in some underground tunnels that look like a masoleum, and then you come to an enclosed room that looks like a small courtyard in front of a crypt? There are four stone coffin-like pedestals and the beast starts out on the crypt roof, then jumps down and comes after you. The only thing I got after defeating that boss was the Shockwave power.

I didn't think I missed anything up to that point.

According to the manual, Time Warp slows down the enemies in single player, but just makes you 200% faster in multiplayer.

When I started the game, I was looking forward to getting that power, since I loved the effect in other games (Max Payne, Jedi Academy, Postal 2, etc), but while playing the game I completely forgot about it.

The first boss (two creatures) seemed immune to almost everything except the exercist power. I spent about 10 minutes running around and hitting them with it before I screwed up and died. I then discovered that the sniper rifle worked on them. Restarted the battle and just kept alternating until they died. The second boss I just avoided and used Pentecost blasts until it died. Lilith was a royal pain in the ass. The only thing that seemed to work on her was Brimstone and I didn't realize that when she split, only one of the copies was vulnerable. I was cursing the game for the fact that I couldn't seem to hurt her half the time.
As for Lucifer, I'm not sure how much effect the conventional weapons had on him, but as soon as the battle started, I hit him with about 30 shots from the sniper rifle, then 15 shots with the railgun. Brimstone worked, but was too hard to hit him. Lightning didn't seem to do anything. I finally used charged Pentecost blasts, which seemed to work pretty well.

I didn't think the models were that bad. Sure, they weren't the most detailed, but they didn't look any worse than the ones in other games from that time period. Actually, I was kind of impressed by the working helmets on the armored soldiers.

I believe that the original game refused to run on later versions of DirectX. I had the demo for it, but couldn't run it because it wanted DX6. Someone online made me a patch so that I could play it and that was when I decided to get the full game.

Yeah, I found out what I did wrong...
I started replaying it, usng the cheat codes to give myself all the powers right from the start. It's not so much that I wanted to cheat my way through the game, I wanted to be able to play with the powers on the earlier levels. I discovered that resurrected enemies don't behave properly in the levels before you officially get the power. Most of them just stand around instead of following you.
Anyway, in the resistance camp (underground masoleum) there's a small hole in the wall with the first angel Aaron and a soldier. After you talk to him and banish him back to Heaven, you get the Time Warp power. The first time through, I missed that part. I kept seeing the goal of "Find Aaron", but I figured that I'd stumble across him later and by the end of the game I'd forgotten about him.
I still don't know what the room with the guard and two buttons (I was wrong when I said it had one button) does. I pressed both and ran out, but didn't see anything new open. I did find out how to get out of the room with the two robots though.
However, there's something really wrong with either the game or my system because the later levels crash a
LOT. It also locks up a lot. In fact I'm at the section where there's a square ring of corridors with crew quarters all the way around and you have to find a bridge access card in one of them. I saved it right after getting off the elevator. I use Possess to take control of one soldier, kill one or two other soldiers and the game locks up. It did it about three times in a row. At that point I got sick of hitting the reset button and quit for the night.
I'd suspect it was the game, but I installed Unreal II a while back and it was doing the exact same thing. At the time I thought it was because the readme said that it has "issues" with W98 and DX9, but now I'm not so sure.
I need to re-install something I've played in the past and see if I get crashes and lockups with a formerly trouble-free game.

So was I the only one who thought it was utter crap?
Angel Dust on 2/5/2009 at 07:19
Nope, Requiem belongs in the very small list of games that I truly regret shelling out cash for. I'm usually pretty damn good at knowing what to buy but I got this game back when I had more money than sense. It might have had a couple of 'cool' spells, and generally only cool in conception rather than execution, but everything else about it was at best mediocre and mostly just terrible.

Although I did enjoy the game, I did notice that it didn't seem as polished as it could have been. The earlier levels were fun, but I hated the ship levels. At a few points, I had no idea which way to go. The goals would pop up on the screen before the other characters had mentioned them, kind of spoiling the interactive moments. My max health and essense increased from 100 and 50 respectively to 200 each, but I don't recall any explanation or justification for this. The Heal Other spell seems to have no point (unless it works on Aaron, I didn't think to try it) and Flight was only necessary in one single spot. The Apocalypse power
might have been useful, but every time I tried to use it, the enemies on the other side of the room were fine while I ended up taking massive damage. Of course part of that is due to the fact that you get hung up on every little piece of scenery you come in contact with, making quickly backing out of a room next to impossible. He also doesn't like going up stairs on an angle, making strafing into position also next to impossible. Most of the human enemies have instant-hit weapons and you get shot the very second you come into view, while the robots' shots actually take time to travel to you, making dodging possible.
I've never been a fan of boss battles, but I especially disliked the ones in Requiem. Why do none of the other weapons work on the first boss, but the sniper rifle does? Why do only some of your offensive powers work on each boss? Why did they make them just flash red rather than making an animation that clearly shows them reacting to being injured? That's the kind of thing I'd expect from a Doom-era game.
I also hated the re-spawning enemies, especially when they come out of empty rooms behind you. At first I thought that there was a limit to the re-spawns, making it possible to truly clear the level, but there are some areas where they just keep coming. I liked being able to resurrect slain enemies and amass a small army which easily took care of most of the enemies that popped up, but invariably after I'd acquired a sizeable number of followers, I'd cross a load zone and they'd all disappear.
Why can I use Insist and Possess on the big, heavily armored soldiers, but I can't resurrect them?
One last thing; The defensive, maneuvering and interactive powers all have keys to cycle them up/down, but for offensive powers, you only have a single "Cycle Power" key. At first I didn't even think there was one for the offensive powers.

Ah Requiem... I enjoyed it. Although I got so far, got totally lost and ended up abandoning it, so I've never actually finished it.
Thanks for reminding me - one of these days I'll really have to give it another whirl.
