Well, I did a search and there was an old thread on Arma 2, but it was from several years back. Does anyone still play old Arma 2? Not the expansions, but the original Arma 2. They've got a free-to-play version now which is compatible with the full version. By "free to play" I mean "exactly like the full version, except missing the high-quality graphics and single-player campaign."
I played the hell out of Operation Flashpoint and its expansions, but I didn't care for the first Arma for a number of reasons. So when I heard that Arma 2 was now free-to-play, I checked it out and fell in love again. Planning on buying it as soon as I have the money to spare, so that I can play through the campaign (and have better graphics).
I particularly enjoy playing on maximum realism settings (which is to say, maximum difficulty except with the A.I. skill toned down to believable levels). Unfortunately, it's a bit difficult to find people who enjoy playing that way. Does anyone here still play Arma 2 "vanilla" or Arma 2 Free, and like playing on max realism?

Everybody's playing Day Z these days.

Okay, let me rephrase: is anyone here still playing unmodded Arma 2/Arma 2 Free?

Yes I am ... or was until very recently. As usual, I want to play the actual game itself and do the campaign before I try any mods.
Edit: As for the setting, I play on my laptop, and the mousepad is a little wonky sometimes, also the mouse buttons are atrocious, not to mention I'm still picking up how to play. So I just play on the normal difficulty. I'm thinking about just getting an external mouse for games like this.

I still need to play through the 5 or however many campaigns there are. I've done a little multiplayer, though, and it was fairly awesome. Warfare seems like it would be fun, although what I've done with other people is just co-op where everyone led their own squad.

I don't regularly play it, but I plan to get back to it a bit and replay the Harvest Red campaign in the near future. I always play on the easiest difficulty setting (Recruit?) though.

Did I hear the words "free" and "multiplayer"? (two words I like very much)

It was one of the first games I bought after I'd gotten a new high-end gaming PC a couple of years back but I only played a couple of missions before getting bored of it. When I heard of DayZ I started Arma2 up again to see if I could talk myself into getting OA but I just ended up getting pissed off with it. I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do, after some driving around a voice came over the radio telling me that some guy was escaping from somewhere and I had to get him, but looking at the map or the objectives screen I couldn't figure out who I was supposed to catch or where he was. But I did find a big X on the map, which I believe was related to some other objective, so I drove over there, got out of the car, and snuck close with my troops in tow. Then a Mission Failed screen came up. I had ran out of time. A brief loading screen later and I was sitting on a bicycle. Ok, so I start pedaling down the road and pretty soon I get told not to leave my troops behind, so I look back and they're all back at the starting point and I can't figure out how to make them follow me. That's when I said "fuck this shit" and turned it off.
Started playing GRAW2 soon afterwards, much better. A lot less glitchy, and streamlined without being dumbed down. Plus it's more focused on stealth, which I like.

Indeed! According to their official site, "Arma 2: Free (A2F) redefines the free-to-play battlefield with its truly unrivalled scale and gameplay possibilities. A2F serves up almost everything offered by the original Arma 2 - the '13th best PC game of all time', according to PC Gamer [1] - minus the campaign, HD graphics and support for user-made addons and mods."
Opinion aside, that information is approximately correct. There are, if I recall aright, a few minor bug-fixes in the latest patch, which are missing in the free version; I believe I read in the changelog that it fixed a few things for
Arma 2, but that they only patched
Arma 2 Free to be multiplayer compatible with the new version of
Arma 2. But aside from this, the graphics, the campaign, and the mod-ability, they're exactly the same.
This is easily the best value I've gotten out of a game. Even better than getting
Diablo from a bargain bin for $1 : D
