I want to add that some people play games because they're fun, not because they look good. Hell, I'll still play Doom, and that has worse graphics than thief! It all boils down to what an individual values most in a video game. I value storyline, gameplay mechanics, etc. over graphics.:thumb: Now, that's not to say that I don't ever want to improve graphics of old games, or if a good well rounded game came around that I would not like it.... For example, I don't mind "improving" the graphics of thief with upgrades such as DDFIX, texture patches, etc.

Seems [alot of] kids these days only care about graphics, and don't appreciate the older titles.:erg::nono:
"... He published Android Nim. in late 1978. In terms of depth and substance, Leo's game was nothing to write home about: just plain old nim. But its graphics were sensational ... The reviewers went wild. This game was fabulous, it was magnificent, it was glorious ..."
Kids these days ... :tsktsk:

I think this is a slight oversimplification though. In kids' these days defense, they never had the opportunity to play these games when they were new.
My roommate always shows me some real old games that he used to play (late 90's) and I think they look hideous, and I couldn't imagine playing them. He feels the same way about Thief.
I think that like Fett says...we fill in the gaps with our imagination. In retrospect however, I think this is much harder to do if you havn't done it before for that game. Blah, tired and rambling now! night folks..

I don't get your point chade. Or yours thief13x.
But let me clarify my point: A lot of "kids" teenagers I know think games older than a few years suck because of the graphics. You don't believe me? Go ask someone who is 13 if they would play thief. They probably won't. I'm not saying everyone is like this, hence "[alot of] kids these days."
What I'm getting at is that a lot of the younger folks don't seem to appreciate the older titles based on graphics. Okay, I admit I can't speak for people, but on observation it seems to be that way. I know someone is gonna say "well they could just not like the game for other reasons." That's true, I'm not going to deny that.

My point was that it's not "kids these days" ... it's everyone. And it always has been. The computer game industry has been focussed on graphics since it's inception.

Well, it's only natural for developers to make use of advancing technology, but I'm talking about people who play games. People who play games influence those who make them. And enough people today that play them think that graphics above all else are important. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I think. Though it's also probably that developers focus more on the graphics because it's tough to get a good storyline. I don't really know.

How did this thread become a 'gameplay trumps graphics' apologia thread?
The question was hands up who thinks Thief 1&2 look great?
o/
Thief 2 was never cutting edge but made some lovely images regardless.
And Thief 1 was perfectly on the ball for its time (And did things almost no one else was doing, like motion capture and proper dynamic lighting. Everyone has just forgotten what graphics were like back then) and both still have considerable charms.
Forgiving Thief games for their graphics doesn't mean you aren't a graphics whore on some level. But hey, who isn't.

Thief wouldn't be much of a thief with those low polygon guards anyway.
So yeah, for me Thief looks great Anyway i haven't really played much games with much better graphics.
We might aswell just all stfu about graphical issues, when we play missions like ANIR series or Mission X ect... ;)
Muzman, i guess we are indeed all a bit of graphic whores. If ground texutre was always the same and it was JORGE and ceiling was a single brown color and walls were just... bleu, then i couldn't stand thief. :D
Anyway, if low graphics matter to you now, but didn't matter back in the day, youre a bit of a mainstream whore, which is alot worse. But i guess this one doesn't really count for anyone here, since we're all Thief fans. :D
Edit: omg, had to remove few smiles, my post was too emote-whorish, omg!

I don't think you're wrong, I just think you're wrong to single out people "these days". People have always responded to good (well, better) graphics. If anything, I think it's getting better nowadays then it used to be.
